Hinds CC JBW Airport hosts annual radio-controlled model jet fly-in

    9:00 am-6:00 pm
    Apr-23-2017

Hinds Community College’s John Bell Williams Airport in Raymond will host the 26th annual Mississippi Afterburner Jet Rally, which is expected to draw more than 85 pilots of radio-controlled model jets, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day April 20-22.

The three-day event, open to the public at $5 per vehicle, will feature pilots from across the nation. Spectators can purchase a variety of food on site, including hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, chicken plates and soft drinks.

The rally is the college’s major scholarship fund-raiser for the aviation department housed at John Bell Williams Airport. The programs include aviation maintenance technology, aviation technology, commercial flight school and the unmanned aerial systems school. Students can receive a two-year associate degree in any of the programs, allowing them to work in the aviation industry. The four programs enroll approximately 75 students.

The scholarship fund fueled by the rally, hosted at John Bell Williams Airport, generates approximately $5,000 to $7,000 in student scholarships. The funds generated by this event over the last 13 years have allowed for the creation and endowment of a scholarship by the Mississippi Afterburners.

Pilots at the rally will perform maneuvers with their turbine-jet propelled radio-controlled models many of which are museum scale models flying at speeds of up to 200 miles an hour, Montgomery said.

As part of the fly-in, awards will be given for Top Gun, Pilot’s Choice, People’s Choice, Best Military Aircraft pre-1960, Best Military Aircraft post-1960, Best Sport Jet and Best Sport Performance, he said.

The physical address for the airport is at 4100 Airport Road, Bolton, MS 39041. It’s just off Clinton/Raymond Road almost halfway between Clinton and Raymond.

    About the author

In 2008, Mississippian Al Arnold learned that his Great-Great Grandfather Turner Hall, Jr., a slave, was owned by Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and served during the Civil War as an orderly for General Robert E. Lee.

In his book about his ancestor’s long and extraordinary life, “Robert E. Lee’s Orderly: A Modern Black Man’s Confederate Journey,” Arnold shares insights he gained during his research. He says the role of slaves in the Civil War is an important and overlooked focal point that African Americans should explore as they find their own connections to this part of America’s history.

Arnold is a member of the Jackson, Mississippi Civil War Round Table and an alumnus of Jackson State University and the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Physical Therapy. He resides in Madison with his wife Tamiko and their three children.

Methodist Children’s Homes 4 th Annual Day of Hope Bringing Hope to Hurting Children in Mississippi

    10:00 am-4:00 pm
    Apr-29-2017

The Methodist Children’s Homes (MCH) will host the 4th Annual Day of Hope on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10 am.

MCH welcomes members of the community to come and tour the campus, meet the children, and learn more about bringing hope to hurting children in Mississippi.

Kate Williams, Chief Development Officer at MCH stated, “I look forward to the Day of Hope each year. It is a day that we share with the members of our community the difference and hope they are making in the lives of our children.”

Children, from across Mississippi, come to MCH hurt, broken, and hopeless.  By the time they leave MCH’s care, they are on the road to healing; but most importantly, they have hope of a brighter future.

“Our goal at MCH is for more children to feel a sense of security, hope, and family throughout the time that they spend with us.” Williams stated.  “It is appalling the number of children in Mississippi who are victims of abuse and neglect.  MCH is their refuge, and for most of the children who come here, it is the first time they ever feel loved.”

The Day of Hope will be held on the campus of the Methodist Children’s Homes located at 805 North Flag Chapel Road, Jackson, MS 39209.  The event will begin at 10:00 am with campus tours, a fish fry, a program and silent auction. This event is free, and is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about providing hope to a hurting child.

“Thank you for supporting my home, and the Day of Hope. Because of you, I am finally free from my abuser and changing my life one day at a time,” a resident at MCH said.  “You are my hero!”

For more information about the Day of Hope, please contact Mandy McCullough at 601-853-5000 ext. 1255 or mmccullough@mchms.org.
