You can’t predict when you might face a situation where you need to unlock a door, but it can happen at any time. Whether you become locked out of your house or can’t gain access to a room, it’s important you know the right ways to break a lock. Since you might not know when this could happen to you, read these ways to open your door without a key to avoid a serious emergency.
Using a credit card to open a locked door is one of the oldest tricks in the book. While it may seem impossible or possibly dangerous to your card, you can do it. However, it’s important you use the correct method to successfully unlock the door. First, you must know this will only work with spring locks—not deadbolts. Grab a card you can risk in case something happens, preferably a bendable laminated card. Force it between the lock and door frame, then bend it back to force the lock back into the door. You can also force it between the door and frame above the lock if there’s no room between the lock and frame. Swipe quickly downward while angling the card toward the frame. You may need a thicker card for this.
Another great tool to use is a screwdriver. A small or thin screwdriver will work best on interior doors or doors with privacy handles. Simply push the screwdriver into the hole on the doorknob straight through for as far as you can. Then, turn or twist the screwdriver until the lock opens. You can also use a slotted screwdriver to open a spring lock if you wedge it between the bolt and frame. Then, wiggle the screwdriver until you push the lock back into the door. Screwdrivers can also remove the hinges from your door if needed.
You can also attempt to pick the lock yourself with a lockpicking set. Lockpicking sets are essential for picking a lock. Not to mention, they come with various sized hooks and rakes to access any style lock. Just remember to choose a high-quality lockpicking set for maximum durability and efficiency. Additionally, it’s imperative you know how to pick the lock or else your efforts will be for nothing.
Bobby pins can open a locked door similar to a lockpicking set, but it will require more focus and patience. You’ll need two bobby pins bent in a specific shape as both will play an important part in this action. One pin will mimic the key, so bend it near the fulcrum so it’s perpendicular to the two free ends. Stick this part at the bottom of the keyhole. Bend the second pin at the fulcrum to form a long, straight piece. Curve one end slightly to form a pick. This goes at the top of the keyhole. The objective is to push each individual locking pin out of the way which will allow the locking cylinder to turn.
Call a Professional
If all else fails, call a professional locksmith. Locksmiths are experts in breaking and creating locks for your home or vehicle. They can also make you a copy of your key, in the event you lose the original. Regardless, a locksmith will have the essential tools to unlocking the lock without harming your door.
On the other hand, make sure that you secure your doors to protect you from intruders.
