Applying for a GHIC or using an EHIC card when moving around the EU
Getting an EHIC is probably one of the easier processes out there, but too many people ignore the processes right in front of them. All citizens of the EU should be applying for an EHIC card as soon as they turn 16. Additionally, people can apply for the card whenever they need it or if they are traveling and might want the insurance of not having to pay a massive medical bill. Many benefits come with the card, including healthcare at a low cost which seems like a dream considering the current prices of healthcare in the country.
Applicants had to follow some rules when applying for an EHIC card and some changes were made to the card over the years. People could use the card throughout the EU, and it covered a wide range of tasks and conditions, but there were a few that they could have to handle themselves or through travel insurance. 40% of insured Europeans have an EHIC card and it would be quite challenging to get them all to switch so it made sense for them to use the same one and get all new applicants to get a new GHIC card.
How do you apply for an EHIC card?
People can apply for an EHIC card online and through one of many websites. There is no actual cost when it comes to applying for the card. However, some websites charge a convenience fee to get through the process. Most people usually apply through the various websites that the authorities affiliate with, and some people would assist with the process and take this forward.
If you had all your information and documents, people could apply for their EHIC or their GHIC in a few minutes. Depending on the website the applicant was using, they provide an indiviual to handle the running about and coordination on their behalf to apply for and collect the card. If they had the time, they could provide all the documents directly, and they would receive the card themselves and move forward themselves. They had to upload all the documents, including the most recent version of their photograph, and they would have everything approved and accepted in a few days.
What are the different types of Insurance cards?
The EHIC card was the most popular card to assist with lowering the cost of insurance, and they used it for quite some time to get through various processes. The card provided people with the ability to travel around the European Union and get their desired healthcare requirements. The challenges and the cost of healthcare can be significantly expensive, and people would have to pay high amounts when they are traveling if they have any issues. The EHIC card allows people to travel without worrying about their expenses on medical requirements. However, there are challenges at the time of Britain talking about moving out of the European Union.
Immediately after Britain finalized their Brexit move, they had to make changes to the processes that they already had running. One of the primary changes was the card, and people with an EHIC card were allowed to keep using it till it expires. However, others who were planning on applying for one would have to apply for a GHIC card.
To explain the situation further, people could apply for a
- a UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC)
- a UK European Health Insurance Card (UK EHIC), if you have rights under the Withdrawal Agreement
Initially, people had to make sure they were carrying their cards when they were traveling, especially if they have a regular medical requirement like dialysis or diabetes and needed assistance when they are in another country. However, there were changes made to the process, people could not apply for a new one. They would not be applying for a new one, but they would get a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC). The purpose of this certificate is to give them the ability to get medical assistance when they are traveling. The PCR would coordinate with the place that they are from and gather the information that they would have likely provided for an EHIC or GHIC and allow them to get the assistance that they need.
Unfortunately, there is a massive backlog because the new change was handled at the beginning of the year. The new idea of the UK leaving the European Union, after a lot of time and discussion, was finalized at the end of 2020. Immediately after the change was made, the UK had to reconnect with the countries that were a part of the EU so they could continue with the relationships they had while they were in the European Union. While the EHIC card can still be used for the same purposes that it was applied for, and still holds the same validity, there is a new card that most will be using now called the GHIC card. People who hold the EHIC can continue using it but the GHIC card would be handed over to the new people getting through the application process.
Why should someone apply for travel insurance?
There are several significant differences between the two, although they both technically revolve around health. Medical insurance usually revolves around accidents and other changes around a person traveling. Getting sick or injured in the woods or hurt when you are skiing down a hill, which is ideally not cornered by the EHIC. They would be open to handling the basic health requirements and hospital bills but travel insurance, depending on the policy that you are working with, would even consider working on providing airlift and other such changes.
Additionally, with the Coronavirus pandemic, clients had to make sure they got through the necessary processes when traveling. Some locations did not allow people to travel without having their EHIC, while other locations were open to them getting a basic COVID test and traveling for a short stay. Similarly, some countries did not allow people to travel without having their travel insurance. The pandemic created a new situation for everyone and people were quite unsure about how they were going to get through the process.
