An often asked question for a writer in his hometown is, “What or how much of our area is used in your works. Is there someone or some place to look for?” Jerry File Jr., the author of the novel Meet John Black, will be the speaker in a program of the Friends of the Clinton-Quisenberry Library Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at the library. The work, described as historical fiction, includes mention of the Clinton World War II prisoner of war camp, Provine Chapel and Mississippi College. He acknowledges that Clinton people have contributed to his writing, pointing out that he has been a writer all his life.
His motivation to write, his works, and the Clintonians who influenced him at Clinton High School and at MC will highlight the program, which will include his answering questions from interested participants. Jerry attended Clinton High in the 1980s, graduating from MC in 1988 with a degree in business administration after beginning his college career as a biology major. He credits all his studies, from the sciences to economics and politics, for giving him specific knowledge to incorporate into his stories. A fiction workshop he took under Barry Hannah, when the Clinton author was writer-in-residence at Ole Miss, was an experience he describes as “pure gold.” About three months after that class ended, he was inspired to write eight short stories, which became a collection named after one of the stories, The Short Happy Political Life of Amos McCary.
