On Saturday, January 14th, the Arts Council of Clinton will present a Eudora Welty Symposium at Aven Hall on the Mississippi College campus.  Symposium panelists will be: Welty Scholars, Dr. Suzanne Marrs, retired professor from Millsaps College and Eudora Welty biographer, Dr. Elizabeth Crews, a professor at Blue Mountain College and singer/songwriters, Claire Holley and Kate Campbell.  The event is free to the public.  This program is financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council.
That evening at 6:00 PM, Claire Holley and Kate Campbell will be in concert at Swor Auditorium in Nelson Hall on the Mississippi College campus.  Both singer/songwriters say that their songwriting has been inspired by the work and life of Eudora Welty.  Both performers are native Mississippians and are both talented musicians.  It was a conversation between Arts Council of Clinton President, Ricky Nations, and Claire Holley concerning Welty’s influence in her songwriting that helped to bring the symposium and concert together.  Holley performed in the 2016 Thacker Mountain Radio Hour in Clinton.
As an added bonus, Acorn Gallery at 406 Monroe St will have on exhibit fourteen of Eudora Welty’s WPA photos.  These photos are provided by the Mississippi Dept of Archives and History and will be on display at Acorn beginning this week thru January 31st.  For those that will be attending the symposium and concert, a short two block walk north on Monroe Street will take people to the Acorn Gallery.  The Arts Council of Clinton is thankful to Acorn Gallery for their help with this event.
Tickets for the concert or symposium can be purchased/claimed at http://www.artscouncilofclinton.org/.  Tickets at the door will be $20 and $10 for students and children.  For those that purchase online, using the Promo Code: TWO4 will receive a 25% discount on their tickets ($5 savings per adult ticket).  Second, the symposium is free as it is being financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council.

The Y will operate Community Youth Career Development Centers (CYCDC), in 14 counties state-wide: Hinds, Rankin, Madison, Copiah, Lincoln, Adams, Pike, Lee, Lauderdale, Lowndes, Desoto, Panola, Warren and Washington.

Jara Miller, Chief Administrative Officer of the Y, says, “We feel confident the Y will be able to build this much needed program, because we are a leader in youth development and education. This program helps kids who might fall through the gaps experience the support and opportunities that can make them successful in life.

Mississippi is targeting youth ages 12 – 18 that are identified and referred to the program by their schools or law enforcement as needing enhancement services and support. Some of the resources the youth will be given access to through the program include: GED preparation, Vocational Education Training, Technology Courses, Career/Workforce Development, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Education, Social Skills, and Substance Abuse Awareness training.

The Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) is working, as part of our Generation Plus (gen+) approach, to maximize all available resources for the children and families of Mississippi. MDHS continues building momentum toward developing cycles of success with families using the gen+ approach the focus is to work with the family as a whole. The goal is to create a foundational framework within the department so that identified resources and services along with program support are aligned with a generation plus approach. Partnering with the Y allows us to reach families throughout the state and in turn invest early on in building a strong foundation that helps nurture the well-being of individuals.

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring the folk duo Hungrytown on January 24th at 7 p.m.  at the Quisenberry Library.   The group is from Vermont, but they spend a good portion of the year performing around the U.S., the U.K. and New Zealand.  Tickets are available at the library, but the show is completely free.  If people aren’t able to get to the library to pick up a ticket ahead of time we’ll admit as many people as we can that evening.  It’s the first time we’ve been able to get a group like this at the library, and it’s a chance for Clintonians to enjoy some live music for free.

    January 24, 7 p.m.

Folk Duo Program at Quisenberry Library

Folk duo ‘Hungrytown’ Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson will be sharing the talents that have earned them a reputation for the quality and authenticity of their songwriting. They bring a a decade of world-wide touring and three album releases to the Clinton program. Lyricist Rebecca Hall is credited with compositions “that sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (Northern Sky, UK) while producer/multi- instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (No Depression) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (Folk and Roots, UK). Hall, a jazz singer, is described as having an attractive pure-voiced alto, and Anderson, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, is a drummer for a variety of garage bands. In the winter of 2003, the duo quit their boring desk jobs in New York, moved to the green hills of Vermont, and decided to pursue a full-time career as touring musicians. They released their first CD, Hungrytown, in 2008. “They pull off the trick of sounding both like traditional English folkies and old school Appalachians, often at the same time.” – NetRhythms (UK)

MSO Presents an Evening of Mendelssohn

MSO Concertmistress, Marta Szlubowska Featured In Popular Violin Concerto

On Saturday, January 28 at 7:30pm, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra presents Bravo! Mendelssohn! at Thalia Mara Hall. Experience Mendelssohn’s uncanny ability to capture picturesque images in music, from his Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture to the Scottish Symphony, which depicts the mysterious landscape of the Scottish moors.

Also, featured is the infectious beauty and energy of his popular violin concerto in the hands of MSO’s own concertmistress, Marta Szlubowska. “The e-minor violin concerto is a mature work and is in fact Mendelssohn’s last symphonic work. Each time I perform this concerto, it is a new love affair. This popular concerto has none equal in its beauty, instrumental purity and virtuosity, as well as wonderful balance between intimate emotion and outward joy and spirit. The interplay between the soloist and the orchestra is magical. I look forward to sharing this lovely work with our audience,” says Marta Szlubowska, MSO Concertmistress.

Dr. Timothy Coker gives a complimentary pre-concert lecture 6:45-7:15 pm on the Mezzanine level of Thalia Mara Hall.

Tickets for Bravo! Mendelssohn! begin at $23 for adults and $5 for students. Advance tickets may be purchased on-line at www.msorchestra.com, by calling (601) 960-1565, or by visiting the MSO office at 201 East Pascagoula Street in downtown Jackson between 9am and 5pm from Monday 2 to Friday. The box office will open at Thalia Mara Hall (255 E Pascagoula Street) at 6:30 pm on the evening of the concert. For more information on this concert and others in the MSO 2016-17 season, visit www.msorchestra.com.

Steve Grohman will be conducting a Creation Seminar This coming Sunday through Wednesday.

Ever wondered what the case for creation is and if the Bible has answers that can be verified by science and the geological record? Does the Bible account for Dinosaurs? Is there any record or proof of Noah’s flood?

Over five sessions these and other issues will be explored to give someone a greater understanding of the Biblical answers to a worldview that includes God and gives answers to the case for creation.

“For me, the creation seminar was one of the most faith affirming and educational experiences I had ever had up to that point in my life.” Scott Phillips

“I always just considered evolution as a tool God used to create the world, however hearing and seeing someone explain creation it help me better understand and appreciate what the Bible actually says and the science there is to prove that to be the case.” Becky P

This seminar is relevant and will hold the attention of kids and adults. He uses hundreds of slides and fossils in his presentation to demonstrate the case for creation and a creator.
