PIANO SENSATION CONRAD TAO JOINS MSO FOR BRAVO II, “FIERCE KEYS” CONCERT ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH!

Tao will bring his signature touch to Schumann’s Piano Concerto

Jackson, Mississippi, November 2, 2017—On Saturday, November 11th at 7:30pm, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present the second concert of its Selby and Richard McRae Foundation Bravo Series, Fierce Keys, sponsored by the Myer and Genevieve Falk Endowment Fund for Culture and Arts of the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson.  Get ready for an explosive evening of brilliance and charm with renowned international pianist, Conrad Tao, who brings dazzle and nuance to Schumann’s Piano Concerto.  The pairing with Shostakovich’s popular, deeply moving Symphony No. 10 makes this an irresistible performance!

Concert pianist and composer Conrad Tao, 23, is shaping a new generation and racking up appearances worldwide, as well as a stash of awards and critical acclaim.  The only classical artist named by Forbes Magazine in 2011 as one of the “30 Under 30” in the music industry (next to Lady Gaga), his contemporary arrangements distinguish him as one of the most compelling forces on the classical music scene today.  A former child prodigy, Tao has been working professionally in his field since age 12.  He has been called a musician of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by the New York Times, and ferociously talented” by Time Out New York.  In 2011, Tao was named a Gilmore Young Artist, an honor highlighting the most promising American pianists of the new generation.

Before Tao makes his debut at Lincoln Center, one of the world’s most prestigious venues, he makes his debut in Jackson, joining the MSO for the “Fierce Keys” concert.  He will bring his ferocious talent to Schumann’s Piano Concerto.  In a recent phone interview with a local writer, Tao says of the Concerto, “I just love how emotional it is.  Schumann’s music is some of the most emotional and expressive you’ll find out there.”  As a performer, Tao likes finding moments which “try to honor the honesty of both……..my expression of something I want to say in the music, and then, the expression of the music”.

Schumann, who only wrote works for solo piano until he was thirty, seems to have struggled at writing piano concertos, attempting two before the final product is near perfection.  In the words of the English critic Donald Frances Tovey, it is “eminently beautiful from beginning to end……..free, spacious, and balanced in form.”  In 1846, the Piano Concerto was premiered to great acclaim, with his wife Clara, a virtuoso pianist, as the soloist.

When the Russian Revolution broke out, Shostakovich was eleven years old.  He lived his entire adult life under the Soviet system.  By the 1930’s, he had become the Soviet Union’s leading young composer, and is now regarded by many as the greatest symphonist of the twentieth century.  By the time of his Tenth Symphony in 1953, this mature work is regarded by some to be his greatest symphony of all.

The MSO Bravo Series presents five concerts per year, all at Thalia Mara Hall.  Tickets for Bravo II:  Fierce Keys are $25 & up for adults and $5 for children/students, when accompanied by a paying adult.  Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.msorchestra.com or by calling (601) 960-1565, or by visiting the MSO office at 201 East Pascagoula Street between 9am and 5pm, Monday thru Friday.  Tickets will also be available at the Thalia Mara Hall box office starting at 6:30pm on the evening of the concert.  Don’t forget the FREE pre-concert lecture given by Tim Coker at 6:45 in the upper lobby of Thalia Mara Hall.  For more information on this concert and others in the MSO 2017-18 Season of Celebrations, visit our website or see us on Facebook.com/JacksonMSOrchestra.

CLINTON — Through a partnership with the Barksdale Reading Institute, Clinton Park Elementary is beginning an outreach program for parents of pre-kindergarten age children.

“We are holding a series of six workshops for parents and guardians of pre-school children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2018,” said Clinton Park Principal Kelli Pope. “They will cover what children need to know and do to be ready for kindergarten, in literacy, math, and general development.”

Pope said the workshops will include simple, daily things that parents can do with their children to help them prepare for kindergarten and to be in a classroom setting.

A similar program was piloted last year in the Quitman and Kosciusko school districts with good outcomes. Pope applied for a Barksdale grant over the summer, and Clinton was one of 11 school districts that received the grant. The funds cover the cost of materials and door prizes for the parent academy.

Workshops will all be held at Clinton Park Elementary School and are free to attend. Childcare will also be provided for children ages 3-10. Snacks will be served.

“All participants will be entered to win a door prize at each session,” Pope said.

Participants who come to all six sessions of the Parent Academy will be eligible to receive a graduation gift in April.

For more information or to register, call Clinton Park at 601-924-5205 or register online here: https://goo.gl/forms/Bi5uS0345XK7ispu1.

Parent Academy meetings will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. at Clinton Park on the following dates:

    –       Oct. 24

    –       Nov. 28

    –       Jan. 25

    –       Feb. 27

    –       March 22

City Hall and the streets of Olde Towne will again be the venue for Clinton to kick off the holdiay season. The city’s official Christmas tree lighting will be held at 6pm on Thursday, November 30, in front of City Hall.

The Lovett Elementary Show Choir will perform favorite Christmas tunes, and Santa will be on hand to greet children and hear their Christmas wishes.

The performance and lighting will be followed by hot cocoa and cookies with Santa himself, but attendees are encouraged not to ruin the surprise for the little ones!

The event is FREE, and organizers laud it as a great way to get into the Christmas spirit with a celebration appropriate for the entire family.
