CLINTON — Through a partnership with the Barksdale Reading Institute, Clinton Park Elementary is beginning an outreach program for parents of pre-kindergarten age children.

“We are holding a series of six workshops for parents and guardians of pre-school children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2018,” said Clinton Park Principal Kelli Pope. “They will cover what children need to know and do to be ready for kindergarten, in literacy, math, and general development.”

Pope said the workshops will include simple, daily things that parents can do with their children to help them prepare for kindergarten and to be in a classroom setting.

A similar program was piloted last year in the Quitman and Kosciusko school districts with good outcomes. Pope applied for a Barksdale grant over the summer, and Clinton was one of 11 school districts that received the grant. The funds cover the cost of materials and door prizes for the parent academy.

Workshops will all be held at Clinton Park Elementary School and are free to attend. Childcare will also be provided for children ages 3-10. Snacks will be served.

“All participants will be entered to win a door prize at each session,” Pope said.

Participants who come to all six sessions of the Parent Academy will be eligible to receive a graduation gift in April.

For more information or to register, call Clinton Park at 601-924-5205 or register online here: https://goo.gl/forms/Bi5uS0345XK7ispu1.

The annual Clinton community Eggstra Special Event, set for Sunday, March 25, from 2:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. at Traceway Park. Open to children ages 12 and younger the event will have the traditional lineup of egg hunts and carnival games.

Eggstra has been one of Clinton’s premiere events for years and is a continued partnership between the Junior Auxiliary of Clinton and the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. Held at Traceway Park, it provides an opportunity for the entire community to come together for a family-friendly egg hunt, with special activities and a visit from the Easter Bunny himself.
“The Eggstra Special event has been successful in past years because it’s a great opportunity for children to interact with members of their community and enjoy playing games outdoors, as well as hunting for eggs, which is always fun, no matter the occasion, but especially for Easter,” said Adam Wade, Director of Clinton Parks and Recreation Department.
Egg hunts will begin at 2:30 p.m., with zero to 2-year-olds hunting first at 2:30 p.m. Ages 3 and 4 will hunt at 2:50 p.m., ages 5 and 6 at 3:10 p.m., and the 7- through 9-year-olds will wrap up the hunt at 3:30 p.m. Event organizers strongly request that only parents of 0-2-year-olds and special needs children enter the hunting area to assist their child.
In addition to the egg and scavenger hunts, children can enjoy prizes, carnival games, space jumps and refreshments. For more information, please visit www.clintonms.org/eggstra.
