The Clinton Community Nature Center will host an Arbor Day Plant Sale on Saturday, February 8.
Arbor Day, a holiday on which groups and individuals are encouraged to plant and care for trees, originated in Nebraska with journalist J. Sterling Morton, a transplant from Detroit. Sterling and his wife loved trees, and he spread his love for nature and his enthusiasm for tress using his newspaper forum.
In January of 1972, Sterling proposed a tree-planting holiday at the meeting of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture. The Board set the date for April 10, and prizes were awarded to groups planting the largest number of trees. It is estimated that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. Eventually, April 22, Sterling’s birthday, was selected as Nebraska’s permanent observance for Arbor Day.
During the late 1900s, observance of Arbor Day became more widespread across the United States, and now National Arbor Day is set for the last Friday in April. However, many state observe Arbor Day on different dates according to their best tree-planting times. In Mississippi, Arbor Day is typically observed on the second Friday in February, which falls on February 9 this year.
The Clinton Community Nature Center’s plant sale will offer a large variety of native perennials, trees and shrubs. Prices will range from $8 to $21. The sale will be held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Center, located at 617 Dunton Road in Clinton. The number of plants will be limited, so shoppers are encouraged to arrive early.
