An Evening of Olde Time Radio will be take in the Mississippi CollegeAven Fine Arts Recital Hall. The live performances will take place on March 2 and 3, and will begin at 7 p.m. both evenings. Tickets will cost $5 and can be purchased at the door.
The performances will take the audience back to the days when the radio was produced live for a viewing. The program will consist of three shows: “The Adventures of Sam Spade, Detective”, “The Burns and Allen Show”, and a radio version of the film, “Casablanca”. The cast is made up of MC students and faculty. Proceeds will go the Mississippi College Communication Department’s theatre program.
Dr. Tim Nicholas, journalism professor and the producer of the show, describes the performance as “A recreation of evenings from the heyday of radio.” Performers will be in 40’s attire, and live piano music will be performed by MC piano teacher Tyler Kemp.
Nicholas said, “Bring your imagination, wear 40s outfits if you care to, and be ready for a trip back in time.”

The Watoto Children’s Choir, a group of 18 orphans from Uganda, will continue its six-month U.S. tour in the Jackson, MS at Wells United Methodist on Saturday March, 4 at 6:00 pm featuring a brand new concert, Signs & Wonders. The performance is free and open to the public.
The concert features worship songs that share the stories of the children and the joy. The children share stories of how their lives changed and how they have been called into a life of purpose to transform their communities. Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled the world sharing the plight of Africa’s orphaned children. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been rescued and now live in a Watoto village. Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa.
Abandoned at a hospital in Kampala, Esther Kahangi was rescued by Watoto as a premature baby and spent her first weeks in critical care. Now, she is a healthy, joyful 8-year-old who is currently touring with the choir.
“I am excited to be a part of Signs & Wonders,” said Esther. “I know that I am a wonder because I am chosen by God as His child.”
“What an extraordinary experience it is to see the Watoto Children’s Choir,” said Brian Houston, Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church. “It lights up the place to see these beautiful kids, and when you hear their stories and learn about where they have come from, you can’t help but think of all God has done.”

Haydn+ also offers guest artist, John Paul in Françaix’s Harpsichord Concerto. British-born John Paul earned diplomas in Piano and Organ at the Royal Academy of Music in London, an honours degree from the University of London, and a doctorate from the University of Colorado. For more than four decades he served as the Organist and Choirmaster at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral and the organist at Temple Beth Israel, in Jackson, Mississippi. His noontime concert series at St. Andrew’s became a model for series throughout the country. Paul tours the United States, South America, and Europe as a harpsichordist, presenting concerts, workshops, and informances, as well as records on the Centaur label.
The MSO Intimate Classics Chamber Series presents concerts in smaller venues, creating a more up close and personal concert experience. Tickets for Haydn+ are $17 for adults and $5 students. In preparation for the 2017 Premier Development League season, Mississippi Brilla FC has announced plans for their upcoming tryout. The Clinton, MS based team, which represents the highest level of soccer in the state of Mississippi, will offer its annual open tryout on Saturday, March 11 from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm at Clinton High School in Clinton, MS. Interested high school, college, and former college players should pre-register for the tryout at brillasoccer.org. There is a $35 registration fee.
Coach Mark McKeever will be returning to the helm of the Mid-South Division team. McKeever will look to pick a team that will take Brilla back to the playoffs after missing out last year.
McKeever said, “Tryouts always bring exciting talents that want to showcase their ability to play for Mississippi Brilla. For many, there is an attraction to play due to the success of the team. Many are also drawn to the ministry, as a result of the great work the club does to share the good news of Jesus Christ through the game of soccer. We want to provide an opportunity for everyone to come and enjoy a quality day of soccer that will allow prospective players to present their talents and meet the directors, coach and staff.”
Mississippi Brilla FC is entering its 11th year of competition in the Premier Development League of the United Soccer Leagues. The PDL is the top developmental league in North America, and has proven to be one of the most important stepping-stones for professional soccer players around the world.
The 2017 season kicks off in May. The 2017 schedule will be released in early February.

Once again the Clinton Parks and Recreation Department and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) will be partnering to provide beginner tennis lessons for children ages 6-12 at Brighton Park.
Lessons will take place Wednesday’s from 4:30 P.M.and Saturday’s from 11:00 A.M. to Noon. Two sessions are scheduled for March 22- April 15 and April 19-May 13.
USTA’s “Ready to Rally” beginner tennis program provides children the opportunity to learn the game of tennis from certified tennis professionals in a fun and engaging environment. Cost for the four week (8 lessons) session is $58.

The course will also cover interviewing, professionalism and job searching techniques. The course fee is $50. Fee includes “YouScience” assessment and course material.

Clinton High School (Clinton, Mississippi) is hosting the twelfth annual Princess Ball, open to girls in grades K-3.
The event is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, March 24 in the CHS Cafeteria. The Clinton High School Jazz Band will provide live music for dancing, and princesses in attendance can have their picture made with the Snow Queen.
Attendees must be accompanied by a Prince Charming (father, grandfather, brother, etc. who is high school age or older) or a Fairy Godmother (mother, grandmother, sister, etc. who is high school age or older). Only one adult can attend the ball with the princess.
Tickets are $50 and proceeds benefit Students Against Destructive Decisions and also the Academic Team’s competition registrations for 2017. Tickets include a T- shirt, and professional picture packets will be available at the ball.
Registration forms are due at CHS no later than March 1. Checks will not be accepted.

Lessons will take place Wednesday’s from 4:30 P.M.and Saturday’s from 11:00 A.M. to Noon. Two sessions are scheduled for March 22- April 15 and April 19-May 13.
USTA’s “Ready to Rally” beginner tennis program provides children the opportunity to learn the game of tennis from certified tennis professionals in a fun and engaging environment. Cost for the four week (8 lessons) session is $58.
The sessions will consist of basic demonstration and instruction of tennis techniques, as well as game strategy and scoring.

Clinton Police are beginning a new initiative to help connect officers and the community. Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman has announced a new Citizens Police Academy, which will be held nightly from March 27 to March 31. It will conclude with a daytime session on Saturday, April 1, followed by a graduation for the participants.
Residents are encouraged to apply for the program, which is designed to give participants an in-depth look at how Clinton police operate. Goals of the Citizens’ Police Academy are to educate and inform the community about the Clinton Police Department, promote a “Community-Oriented Policing” philosophy, provide a forum for police and community interaction and work together to create a safer city.
Hayman says the program’s goal is “to strengthen citizen awareness by promoting positive partnerships between police and the community to enhance the quality of life for all citizens in the City of Clinton.” The course is open to anyone older than 18 and requires a background check by the police department. According to program coordinator Lt. Mike Kelly, participants in the program will visit a number of places in the community that are integrated with CPD, including the 911 communications center, the bomb squad, animal control, special weapons, and tactics (SWAT). Students will also learn about use of force and how to assess a scene in which force might be necessary.
Students will learn about the technology and use of body-worn cameras, a new acquisition of the department. The citizens program is one of the best public relations tools available to the police department, Hayman said. Lt. Mike Kelly, Community Relations Officer, added, “The Clinton Police Department would like to use the Citizens Police Academy program to create positive relationships between the community and the police. Our goal is to make a safer city through community-oriented policing and better understand how to serve our citizens at the same time. We hope to educate members of the community about how the Clinton Police Department works and invite them to become active members in our efforts to make the City of Clinton a great place to call home.”
Kelly says he expects people to sign up for the program to learn about how police are trained, how the various units within the department operate, and the laws officers follow, adding that the program is designed to add transparency to the profession and give students an idea of a side of policing rarely seen.
“This is kind of like an up-close-and-personal opportunity for them to learn about what the police department [does],” Kelly said. To enter the program, applicants must pass a background check, Hayman said, noting that not all applicants will be chosen for the first round of the Academy this spring. With plans for additional academies in the future, Hayman hopes to make it a recurring program of the Clinton Police Department.

Audrey is an aquatic entomologist working at the US Army Engineer Research & Development Center and a graduate student in the Biology Department at the University of Mississippi. She earned her Master’s degree in Entomology at Clemson University in 2012. She lives in rural, northwestern Hinds County, with her husband (Bradley), daughter (Eleanor), two dogs and seven chickens.
Over the last 15 years, the population size of Monarchs has declined drastically, raising concerns of all who care about this amazing creature. One way we can help is to protect and create pollinator habitat in open areas, such as roadways, and provide host plants for Monarch caterpillars. Mississippi is an important part of the incredible Monarch migration, and we have an important role to play in ensuring the survival of Monarch butterflies. Join us on Tuesday, March 28th as Audrey discusses how we can protect Mississippi’s Monarch and Pollinator Habitats!
