Brittany Wagner, Famed Athletics Academic Counselor and Star of “Last Chance U,” to Speak at Northside Baptist Church

Northside Baptist Church will host acclaimed athletic academic counselor and life couach Brittany Wagner on Sunday, January 7, at 4:0 P.M. Northside is located at 1475 E Northside Drive in Clinton.

Brittany hails from Clinton and attended Samford University before earning her Bachelor’s degree in sports communication and Master’s degree in sports administration from Mississippi State. After working four seasons as athletic academic counselor at MSU, she arrived at East MS Community College in 2008 to mentor JUCO football and basketball players.

During her time with the three-time NJCAA National Champion Lions football squad, she helped over 200 football players and over 50 men’s basketball athletes reach the next level. Many of the players she counseled included Quinton Dial of the Green Bay Packers, Denico Autry of Mississippi State and the Oakland Raiders, Za’darius Smith of the Baltimore Ravens, Jarran Reed of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Seattle Seahawks, Chad Kelly of Ole Miss and the Denver Broncos, D.J. Jones of the San Francisco 49ers, and Avery Gennessey of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brittany garnered world-wide fame as the star of the NetFlix documentary series “Last Chance U” which followed the interaction between her and the players at a school known for giving troublemakers their last chance at making it to the NFL. Her stardom landed her interviews on ABC’s Nightline, the Dan Patrick Show, GQ Online, the New York Times, the New York Daily News, the Boston Globe, the Miami Herald, and on countless radio talk-show hosts from coast to coast. Her common question, “Do you have a pencil?” has become a famed catch phrase.

For the past year, Wagner has traveled all over the U.S. giving motivational speeches and she launched her own company entitled 10 Thousand Pencils after her departure from EMCC. She works individually with high school and college athletes, administrators, counselors, and teachers on academic success and life skills. She recently partnered with media mogul Cadence 13 to develop her own weekly podcast “Sharpen Up with Brittany Wagner” which launches in January, 2018.

The admission is free and all are welcome. A question and answer session will follow her address.

CLINTON — Through a partnership with the Barksdale Reading Institute, Clinton Park Elementary is beginning an outreach program for parents of pre-kindergarten age children.

“We are holding a series of six workshops for parents and guardians of pre-school children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2018,” said Clinton Park Principal Kelli Pope. “They will cover what children need to know and do to be ready for kindergarten, in literacy, math, and general development.”

Pope said the workshops will include simple, daily things that parents can do with their children to help them prepare for kindergarten and to be in a classroom setting.

A similar program was piloted last year in the Quitman and Kosciusko school districts with good outcomes. Pope applied for a Barksdale grant over the summer, and Clinton was one of 11 school districts that received the grant. The funds cover the cost of materials and door prizes for the parent academy.

Workshops will all be held at Clinton Park Elementary School and are free to attend. Childcare will also be provided for children ages 3-10. Snacks will be served.

“All participants will be entered to win a door prize at each session,” Pope said.

Participants who come to all six sessions of the Parent Academy will be eligible to receive a graduation gift in April.
