  • History Comes Alive at Milepost 89
    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    Sep-15-2018

The Clinton Visitor Center, at Milepost 89 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, is the backdrop for HISTORY at its best portrayed by living historians on aspects of the Civil War and War of 1812. The event will be held on Saturday, September 15, from 10am-3pm. You do not want to miss this informative, fun, and entertaining event for the entire family. The visitor center would like to express appreciation to the many living historians who give of their time and talents to portray these moments in history.

SEE the flash, SMELL the smoke and FEEL the roar of an 1841 6-Pound field artillery piece as you meet the civil war reenactors of The 3rd Company Washington Artillery of New Orleans. They will be demonstrating the ordnance and firing order of the smooth bore cannon which will be fired on the hour and half hour beginning at 10:00am. They are distinguished as the most widely-known and prestigious Confederate Artillery Battalion of the American Civil War. Local 3rd Company reenactors from Clinton are Alan Chambers, Glenn Sikes, R.C. Stricklin, and Mike McGuffie. Other members are Charlie Ferg, Charlie Mott, Kevin Davis, Jacob Davis, and Dan Harthcock.

HEAR the story of the Union Inland Navy that became The Mississippi Squadron, one of the greatest, yet least studied, aspects of the Civil War. You will meet Gunners Mate L. Osborne as he tells you about the ironclads and gunboats they created, their patrols of thousands of miles of rivers, and the battles they fought inside the iron monsters! You can view some very interesting artifacts!

SPEAK to an 1812 Physician/Surgeon and see why medicine was drastically different in 1812 than what it is today. Most sicknesses were treated at home and involved family remedies. Operating methods were primitive, and completely unsanitary in most cases. It was a bad time to be in need of medical treatment at home, as well as in the midst of battle. Dr. Frank (Butch) Kirtley will entertain you with his practices and remedies of the era!

The Clinton Visitor Center is located at 1300 Pinehaven Road. To get there, take the Clinton exit at Milepost 89 on the Natchez Trace Parkway and turn left onto Pinehaven Road; or from I-20 take Exit 36 and turn north onto Springridge Road which becomes Pinehaven Road.

Parking is available at the Clinton Visitor Center, and additional parking is available at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 1301 Pinehaven Road. Use the sidewalks and walk signal at the traffic light to walk north to the visitor center.

  • Coffee with a Cop
    8:30 am-9:30 am
    Sep-19-2018

Area residents are invited to join the Clinton Police Department for Coffee with a Cop on September 19. The morning meeting will be held at the Fountain View Cafe at Southpointe Business Park. Clintonians can meet with Chief Hayman and officers from 8:30a until 9:30 a.

The event is designed so that police officers and community members can meet in a comfortable environment to discuss any topic – from crime to neighborhood nuisance issues. Over a cup of coffee, community members and police officers can get to know each other better in efforts to build relationships.

Chief Ford Hayman, upon his appointment as police chief, shared his plan to engage the community in a more direct manner and to build relationships between citizens and police officers, and Coffee with a Cop has become a vital tool to accomplish those goals.
