Thacker Mountain 2019
The Arts Council of Clinton is proud to announce that the Thacker Mountain Radio Hour (TMR) will be returning to Clinton on June 15th. This will be the fourth year in a row that Thacker has started their summer season in Clinton.
“We’re really excited about Thacker returning to Clinton. It was well received the past three years with large crowds and a great shows”, said Arts Council of Clinton President, Bob Blanton.
This year’s Clinton show will feature the Amanda Shaw and The Cute Guys of New Orleans and Richard Grant, author of “Dispatches from Pluto”. The show will be performed at the Clinton HS auditorium on June 15th at 6 p.m.
Thacker is an hour-long show recorded live and broadcast on Mississippi Public Broadcasting and Alabama Public Radio at 7 p.m. each Saturday. The show is generally recorded in Oxford, MS.
“We are really fortunate to have Thacker back again. They only have four or five shows per year outside of Oxford and it is a very entertaining and fun event”, said Blanton.
Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased online at www.artscouncilofclinton.org or at the door.
Proceeds from the event will go used for scholarship awards to students, teacher grants to local teachers, art exhibits and contests and additional education and entertainment events.
Thacker Mountain Radio Hour 2019
The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, the Oxford, MS-based music and literature program, returns to Clinton on Saturday, June 15 at 6 pm at the Clinton High School auditorium. Tickets are $15 and are available from Clinton Arts Council members, at the door, or online at the Art Council’s website, www.artscouncilofclinton.org.
Guests on the show will include veteran Mississippi R&B vocalist Dorothy Moore, acclaimed author Richard Grant and up and coming New Orleans fiddler Amanda Shaw. The show is hosted by Oxford writer Jim Dees and Thacker house band, the Yalobushwhackers.
The Clinton High School auditorium is located at 401 Arrow Drive. An after party with live music will take place on the Brick Streets of Olde Town following the radio show.
The Clinton performance will not be broadcast live. The show will air on Saturday June 22 at 7 pm on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB). The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour can be heard in the Clinton/Jackson area every Saturday at 7 pm on MPB, carried locally on WMPN 91.3 FM.
Clinton Arts Council president Ricky Nations said he expects another large crowd for the annual event. “Make sure you’re there,” he advised. “Tickets are moving quickly for this year’s Thacker Mountain Radio Hour in Clinton. We feel like the show has another powerhouse line-up.”
Jackson, MS native Dorothy Moore is a four-time Grammy nominee whose 1976 recording of “Misty Blue” (reportedly done in one take) went to No.1 on the R&B charts and No. 3 on the pop charts. Her later hits included her rendition of the Willie Nelson classic, “Funny How Time Slips Away” and the Top Five hit, “I Believe You.”
Moore was inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame in 2001 and shared a Blues Trail marker in 2008 with Jackson’s Alamo Theatre. Her most recent CDs, all released on her Farish Street Records label include, Blues Heart, Gittin Down Live and I’m Doing Alright.
Moore said in a recent interview that she is “Mississippi through and through. Nothing but peas and cornbread. I’m proud to be from Mississippi, and I hope the folks are proud of me.”
Richard Grant is the author of Dispatches From Pluto: Lost and Found in the Mississippi Delta (Simon and Shuster) a zany and often heart-wrenching chronicle of his year living in the Mississippi Delta. The book became a New York Times bestseller, won The Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize and became a publishing phenomenon within the state.
Mississippi author Curtis Wilkie wrote: “In the best tradition of Mark Twain’s The Innocents Abroad, British travel writer Richard Grant explores the otherworldly Mississippi Delta by settling into an aging plantation home and letting himself be captured by an eccentric, racially-tortured and wondrously hospitable culture. Dispatches from Pluto is wise, wry, sympathetic and spot-on.”
Grant currently lives in Jackson, MS.
Amanda Shaw is a fiddler, singer-songwriter, bandleader and actress from Mandeville, LA now based out of New Orleans. Shaw and her band, the Cute Guys, are known for their fiery, energetic performances that are Cajun-based but also explore rock and roll, country, blues and funk-flavored R&B. The band members have played with Shaw since she was a ten-year-old classically-trained prodigy. Shaw’s most recent CD is Good Southern Girl.
Thacker producer Kate Teague says the Thacker crew is raring to go. “It’s always a treat to be invited back to such a welcoming arts-based community as Clinton,” she said. “With the help of Ricky Nations, we have secured a very exciting and dynamic line up. I think this show will have a little something for everyone, and we’re looking forward to an exciting evening with our Clinton audience.”
More information on the Clinton show and Thacker’s schedule of summer broadcasts and other upcoming live shows is available at the Thacker website: http://thackermountain.com/.

“If you are having trouble finding qualified employees, we want to know,” Martin said. “Tell us any specific things that need to be addressed. We want to start a conversation so that both the businesses and our students will benefit.”
