By Datti Jinkiri

Clinton High School senior kicker Luke Hopkins was named Scorebook Live’s Mississippi High School Athlete of the Week yesterday. He earned the honor after accumulating 37.11% of the 76,000 plus votes that were cast this past week.

Hopkins won the honor after drilling a 40-yard field goal with no time remaining on the clock to help the Arrows defeat Tupelo 17-14. Due to Hopkins’ game-winning kick, the team clinched a spot in the MHSAA Class 6A Playoffs. Earlier in the game, he also had a clutch 50-yard punt that was downed inside the Golden Wave’s seven-yard line.

Hopkins, who is a starter on the boys’ soccer team, has made four of six field goals this season, with the 40-yarder against Tupelo being his season long. He has also made 27 of 30 extra points.

He doubles as the team’s punter, where he averages 35.7 yards per punt with his season long being a 59-yard bomb. Hopkins has also had 12 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
