Clintonians part of New Stage Come From Away production
Special to The Clinton Courier

Jennifer Smith of Clinton will play Diane (and others) in the New Stage production, set for May 27 through June 8.
Several Clintonians will help New Stage Theater tell the story of 7,000 passengers stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, in the aftermath of 9/11, and the community that welcomed them with open arms. Jennifer Smith will serve as an actress in the production, Carol Joy Sparkman is the musical director, and Dave Ellis is a set carpenter.
The production, Come From Away, is a winner of multiple Tony and Oliver Awards and features a high-energy Celtic-inspired folk-rock score and a fast-paced, ensemble-driven performance style. A celebration of kindness, resilience, and the ties that bind humans together in extraordinary times will take place at New Stage Theater from May 27 through June 8.
For this production, the theatre’s production team has engineered and built a custom motorized turntable on stage. New Stage representatives say that the rotating set piece allows the action to flow seamlessly and adds powerful movement to the storytelling, enhancing the immersive experience. With a cast performing multiple roles, seamless staging and music that pulses with life, Come From Away is a moving reminder that kindness can triumph over fear—and that even the most unlikely connections can change lives forever.
Artistic Director Francine Reynolds said, “We are thrilled to be one of the first regional theatres to be presenting Come From Away after its incredibly successful run on Broadway and popular Broadway tour. Since 2017, we have been waiting to produce this regional premiere, and I cannot wait for our audiences to be swept up by the show’s dynamic score and vibrant, fast-paced narrative. They will experience a powerful and joyous story performed by New Stage’s terrific company of actors and musicians. Come From Away is truly a celebration of the best of humankind.”
Performances are scheduled for May 27 through 31 and June 3 through 7 at 7 p.m., with matinee performances on June 1 and 8 at 2 p.m., and a special new mid-week matinee on Wednesday, June 4, at 1 p.m., for those seeking a daytime theatre experience.
