Slightly Tarnished performing at Friday Nights at Milepost 89

Special to The Clinton Courier

Slightly Tarnished, a unique group of musicians, will perform on Friday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Clinton Visitor Center. The group is unique in that the members have been playing music for decades, and their music influences come from several genres of music. The Beatles, John Prine, The Eagles, Merle Haggard, The Avett Brothers, George Jones, Led Zepplin and Fats Domino are just a few of the musicial talents the group mentions as influential.

“I love music and consider it a major part of my life. It is the universal language that binds us all together,” said Robert Ferren, spokesperson for the band.

“We all come together from different backgrounds but are joined together by our love of music, friendship and our love for our children. We wanted our music to make a difference and to be relevant; so, about four years ago, we made a decision to donate one hundred percent of what we earn with our music to the Children’s of Mississippi Hospital. We all have kids and grandkids and wanted to help in some small way with the fight to help sick kids. Our organization is called Singing For the Kids. I am happy to say we have donated almost $23,000 to the Children’s of Mississippi Hospital over the years,” said Robert Ferren, spokesperson for the band.

Three of the five band members have been playing since the sixties and say they love performing for live audiences. The band members include Ed Tucker, lead guitar, harmonica and vocals; Marijane Whitfield, keyboard and vocals; Deborah (Nan) Hydrick, vocals; Phillip Till, acoustic guitar, banjo and vocals; and Robert Ferren, acoustic guitar and vocals.
Friday Nights at Milepost 89 is held the third Friday of the month at the Clinton Visitor Center. This is the program’s tenth year to bring acoustic music in a unique setting to the local community. Admission to each performance is at least “89” cents, and collections go to the musicians.
