Residents asked to donate canned green beans for March of the Mayors food drive

Canned green bean donations can be dropped off through February 27 at City Hall at 300 Jefferson Street.
The state’s 16th Annual March of the Mayors Food Drive officially is officially underway, and Clinton is stepping up to do its part, joining nearly a dozen other metro cities and over 55 cities across the state in the effort.
March of the Mayors is a state-wide, annual food drive and distribution event hosted by the non-profit group Extra Table, the only non-government-subsidized food bank in Mississippi. The organization, founded in 2009, is focused on delivering healthy, shelf-stable food to those who need it most across Mississippi. Its mission is to end hunger in Mississippi – efficiently, respectfully and by offering hope – with the support of donors, hardworking volunteers and strong partnerships.
One of Extra Table’s premiere annual programs is March of the Mayors. Driven by the mayors of dozens of cities across Mississippi, March of the Mayors is a statewide canned food drive. Broken into five regions (The Coast, the Pine Belt, the Jackson metro area, the Mississippi Delta and North Mississippi area), each participating city collects a particular food item for a month. The week following the close of the drive, Extra Table hosts five food-box packing parties in five cities.
“Mississippi’s Largest Food Box Packing Party” in each city will include Moon Pies, Mardi Gras beads, hundreds of volunteers and a jazzy second line with a mission to feed hungry Mississippians. At the end of each regional food box packing party, food collected and packed is picked up by the local food pantries of each participating city.
Donations collected will be organized and distributed at this year’s packing party, set for Wednesday, March 4, at Christ United Church, located at 6000 Old Canton Road in Jackson.
Volunteers from across the metro area are invited to volunteer to help at the packing party, set for 9 a.m. until noon. To sign up to volunteer or for more information, visit ExtraTable.org.
