Pocket park could be coming to Olde Towne

Main Street Clinton is working on a proposal for a small outdoor gathering space in the Olde Towne Historical District.  The Jefferson Street Pocket Park would be located in a narrow strip of greenspace at the rear of the businesses on the east side of Jefferson south of Leake Street.

Main Street Clinton Director Tara Lytal says the project is in the conceptual stage now, but they’d like to be able to proceed with it next year.

“If all of the pieces fall into place, hopefully we could start moving on it maybe late spring or early summer,” she says.  Lytal unveiled the project during the July 21 Board of Aldermen meeting.

“The idea was that we’re always looking for places for people to gather,” she says, noting that the pocket park’s location would be convenient for those wanting to enjoy a meal from a nearby restaurant in a comfortable outdoor setting. 

“It’s right there behind a lot of those commercial buildings [on Jefferson Street.]  You’ve got The Spring Nutrition there, you’ve got Krilakis on the end, 303 Jefferson right across the street, The Bank.  So, you’ve got a lot of eateries, the bakery and also Coach’s Creamery right there, not far at all.”

Lytal says families could pick up food and dine at the pocket park without having to worry about the noise their kids might be making.  The initial concept includes tables and chairs, benches, planters and a shade structure.  She says it also includes a stage, “so if we did want to have a small concert in there, we could.” 

And, by giving the pocket park a flexible design, it could accommodate a variety of uses.   

According to Lytal, “The possibilities are only limited by the size of the space, I guess.”

Main Street would have to lease the privately-owned property. 

“We’re trying work out what that would look like,” she says.   

As Lytal told the Board, “This is not a done deal.  This is what we would like to see happen.”
