Brilla’s 2026 season rekindles excitement in Clinton

After a challenging 2025 season, Mississippi Brilla FC returned this summer with something to prove. By the time the final whistle blew on the 2026 campaign, the club had done much more than improve its record—it had reignited excitement around soccer in Clinton and reminded the community what Brilla has represented for more than twenty years.

Brilla finished the season with a 6-3-3 record, narrowly missing a spot in the USL League Two playoffs. Along the way, the club became one of the league’s most entertaining teams, scoring 32 goals while playing an exciting, attacking style of soccer. Forward Julen Recalde, a native of Spain, led the way with nine goals, finishing among the league’s top scorers.

For Head Coach Mike Azira, the season represented a return to the standard Brilla has long been known for.

“After last season, we knew we had to get back to who we are,” Azira said. “This group embraced that challenge from the first day they arrived. They played for each other, represented our mission well, and gave our fans an exciting team to rally behind all summer. We’re proud of what we accomplished, but we’re even more excited about where we’re headed.”

Now in his fourth season as Brilla’s head coach, Azira has continued to shape the program with the same leadership that made him successful as a member of the Uganda National Team and throughout his professional career in Major League Soccer. With many of this summer’s players expected to return in 2027, the foundation is in place for continued success.

While the wins on the field were important, the biggest story may have been the growing connection between Brilla and the Clinton community.

For the first time, the club called Mississippi Christian University’s Robinson-Hale Stadium home. The move helped create an outstanding game-day experience, with attendance topping 500 fans on multiple occasions throughout the summer. Families packed the stands to cheer on a team that represented 13 different countries, giving local supporters a unique opportunity to experience the global nature of soccer without leaving Clinton.

Nearly 100 young players participated in Brilla’s annual Pathway to the Pros Camp, where campers learned from the same collegiate and international players they later watched compete under the lights. This summer also featured the club’s expanded VIP Camp Experience, allowing campers to visit the locker room, walk onto the field with the players before kickoff, enjoy a pregame pizza party and spend time collecting autographs and building relationships with their Brilla heroes.

Brilla also continued its commitment to serving the broader Jackson metro area by partnering with local ministries to host free urban soccer clinics. Those clinics provided children with the opportunity to learn the game while interacting with players from around the world, reinforcing the club’s desire to use soccer as a way to invest in the next generation.

Throughout the summer, players became familiar faces in churches, community events and local neighborhoods. They participated in World Cup watch parties, worshipped alongside local families and served throughout the community, building relationships that often became just as meaningful as the matches themselves.

That community impact has always been central to Brilla’s mission. While championships remain a goal, the organization exists to use soccer as a platform to develop leaders, build relationships and share the hope of Christ.

Looking back, the 2026 season will be remembered not simply because of a winning record or a dramatic turnaround, but because it brought renewed energy to Brilla Soccer Ministries. The combination of exciting soccer, community involvement and strong support from local fans created momentum that the club hopes will continue well into next summer.

As preparations begin for 2027, there’s genuine optimism surrounding the program. With a talented core of returning players, an experienced coaching staff and a community that continues to embrace the club, Brilla appears poised to build on one of its most exciting seasons in recent memory.

The organization extends its sincere appreciation to Mississippi College, its sponsors, families that provided a team meal, churches, volunteers and the hundreds of fans who made this summer so memorable. Their support continues to make Brilla more than just a soccer club—it remains a ministry that is making a difference both on and off the field.
