East Central Dooms Eagle Playoff Hopes

jp-elkinsThe Hinds Eagles entered the contest versus East Central needing some momentum following their upset win over Co-Lin a week ago. A win versus East Central would put the Eagles needing only a win against Jones County Junior College next week to put them in the playoffs. It would be homecoming for the Warriors of East Central and the Eagles knew that they would have to play really well to leave Decatur with a win.
The first quarter would be a disaster for the Eagles and it set the tone for what type of day it would be for the Eagles. The Warriors received the opening kickoff and put together a drive deep into Eagle territory. The Eagle defense stepped up and got a stop on fourth down but it was negated with a personal foul penalty against the Eagles. East Central would then score on a 17-yard touchdown pass a few plays later to go up 7-0. The Eagles turned the ball over on their first three possessions and East Central converted on each opportunity and with 5:22 left in the first quarter, East Central led 28-0.
In the second quarter, the Eagles put together multiple drives but could not finish them by putting points on the board. Hinds had two drives end in missed field goal attempts. The Eagle defense held the Warrior offense silent the entire quarter. Right before the end of the half, Desmond Hunter was picked off and East Central returned it 22 yards to take a 35-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Eagle offense got on the board, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell on the road 45-14. The loss officially ended any hope of the Eagles making the playoffs.
Freshman quarterback JP Elkins threw for a touchdown and also ran for one. Devante Scott added 103 yards of total offense. Nic Chatman led the Eagle defense with 5 tackles and one tackle for loss.
The Eagles will return home to Joe Renfroe Stadium Thursday, October 20, 2016 to host Jones County Junior College at 6:30 pm.
