Season-Best Shooting Leads Mississippi College Women’s Basketball to Win

The Mississippi College women’s basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season as the Lady Choctaws toppled LeMoyne-Owen College, 88-64. The LOC falls to 0-11 on the campaign.

Mississippi College shot a season-high 49.3 percent from the field along with a season-best clip from the free throw line 81.3.

Mississippi College outscored LeMoyne-Owen by 20 points in the paint as MC totaled 50 of its season-best point total in the paint.

All 13 Lady Choctaws posted points in the scoring column led by Zariah Matthews’ season-high 11 points. The mark surpasses her previous best of 5 points against Delta State.

Kaitlyn Thompson, Toni Wood and Cortrice Golden also posted double figures with 10 points each. The point total marks a season-best for Thompson, who surpassed her previous mark of nine points against Lane College.

Wood just missed her second double-double of the season and third of her career with a team-best nine rebounds. Thompson finished second on the team in boards with a season-high seven – besting her previous mark of four against Lane College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mississippi College outscored the Lady Magicians 24-10 in the second quarter after leading 21-17 after the first 10 minutes of action. The Lady Choctaws outscored LOC 44-22 over the second and third quarters to extend their lead.

Mississippi College held LeMoyne-Owen to just 29-pecent shooting from the field in the first half as the Lady Choctaws connected 47.2 percent of its shots.

The Navy and Gold forced 16 LeMoyne-Owen turnovers and capitalized with 19 points off the LOC miscues.

NEXT UP

Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 15 as it travels to Lee University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. central.
