With 30 days until the start of the baseball season, Mississippi College has announced its 2017 schedule. 21 Division II opponents help comprise the slate.
MC opens the season with seven straight home contests with four contests against Florida Tech followed by a three-game series against Lindenwood University. The series with FIT starts on Feb. 3 and closes on Feb. 5. The series with LU starts on Feb. 11.
“We are excited to start a great and challenging season ahead. We open up with two non-conference teams that come from traditionally big time conferences in Division II baseball,” said head coach Jeremy Haworth. “Opening weekend, we play Florida Tech out of the Sunshine Conference, who will test us right out of the gate. They have had a lot of success the last couple of years and will give us a challenge to start the year. Lindenwood is also a team that will give us a challenge early in the season. We look forward to having them at Mississippi College and the challenges of a great series.”
The seven games are first of 29 at Frierson Field for the Choctaws this season.
“Playing these two great programs early will help us prepare for the Gulf South Conference,” Haworth said. “We would rather face adversity early than be challenge with it once we get into conference play with West Florida and West Alabama on the road to open up conference play.”
The Gulf South Conference portion of the ledger has 11, three-game series beginning on Feb. 15 at West Florida, who finished as the top seed heading into the GSC Tournament. MC took the opening game from the Argos last season – marking it as the first win in series history with UWF.
The weekend GSC weekend sends the Choctaws to Livingston, Ala., to face West Alabama. The series begins on Feb. 25.
Prior to opening GSC play, the Navy and Gold travel to Montevallo, Ala., to face the Montevallo Falcons in the first road contest of the season.
Haworth sprinkled NCAA region outings against his former conference, the Great American, with non-conference, midweek affairs with home-and-home tilts with Arkansas-Monticello (Feb. 22 in Clinton, Mar. 7 in Monticello, Ark.), a home contest against Southern Arkansas (Apr. 5) and a doubleheader at Henderson State (Apr. 11).
MC’s first, home GSC series is slated for Mar. 4 against Shorter University. Other home conference series are West Georgia (Mar. 25-26), North Alabama (Apr. 8-9) and Alabama-Huntsville (Apr. 14-15).
The regular season concludes with a three-game series against in-state and conference foe, Delta State. The series against the Statesmen opens on Apr. 29 and wraps up on Apr. 30 with Senior Day.
