A Look Inside the Collegian: Mississippi College’s Newspaper

Kelsey Devazier is an editor for The Collegian, MC’s newspaper.  Devazier is a senior at MC majoring in journalism. She joined MC’s Collegian staff the third semester of her Junior year, and this is her third semester as a staff member. Her first job on the Collegian’s staff was a reporter, then she was promoted to assistant editor. Today, DeVazier is the editor in chief of MC’s newspaper.

“The Collegian could be a voice for MC.” Devazier believes MC’s Collegian writers and staff members keep individuals informed on the latest campus news. She says that with the opinions section of the Collegian students are able to display their thoughts. “That doesn’t mean that everyone is going to agree with them. It’s really cool that we’re able to publish stuff like that.”

Devazier says that each staff member places their effort into the paper. When she was the reporter for the Collegian, she wrote two stories for each issue. As the head editor, she spends most of her time managing. “I spend at least an hour everyday doing something for the Collegian.” Devazier says that she makes fun quizzes for readers and talks with her assistant editor about distribution.

“I love coming to meetings where people throw out ideas.” Devazier says the Collegian stories are based off ideas from students who may or may not be on staff. “It’s really cool,” she says.

The issues are published bi-weekly. The Collegian meetings are on Monday, before one issue gets published in print on Tuesday, and two weeks later the next issue is published. The issues are distributed in public locations on campus were individuals like to congregate. Devazier says they place yellow boxes in front of Pimentos, the lobbies of dorms, 1826 restaurant, the Healthplex, Jennings Hall, Cups Expresso Cafe, the Commons, and Leland Speed Library.

“We want to increase our social media presence by building our website up and making fun quirky quizzes.” Devazier aims to give readers content they can look forward to.

A new section for The Collegian this semester was “A Dose of Devotion.” The Assistant Editor for the Collegian, Josh Carter created an “Ask the Collegian,” section where the Collegian staff asks questions, answer them, and publish it.  A couple of years from now, Devazier hopes to see a broader readership for The Collegian.
