Hinds Tennis Competes at National Tournament, Finishes Ranked 23rd

The Hinds Community College men’s tennis team sent two representatives to compete in the 2018 NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Plano, Texas from May 14 to May 18. Freshmen Carlos Trujillo (Bogota, Colombia) and Mateo Garcia(Bogota, Colombia) were sent as representatives for the Hinds men’s tennis team to compete in the tournament both in the singles and doubles brackets.

As singles, both Trujillo and Garcia won their first bouts allowing them to advance to the championship bracket and earning their team points. Despite their early success, both Garcia and Trujillo fell in their second singles matches eliminating them from singles tournament play.

In doubles play, Trujillo and Garcia lost their first match against a pair from Mesa Community College eliminating them from the championship bracket, and entering them into back draw play in which they could still earn team points for winning matches. The duo hit their stride in doubles play as they began to rattle off wins including a victory over in-state foe, Copiah-Lincoln Community College, which sent them to the back draw final for doubles. In the final, the Hinds pair would fall to New Mexico Military Institute ending their run.

As one of four MACJC teams present at the National Tournament, Trujillo and Garcia gave their team a national finish of 23rd despite being only two competitors facing many other colleges with full teams present. The high team finish for the pair will be the team’s ranking entering next season. Trujillo, Garcia, and team will be looking for even higher finishes as they return next season.
