If you love fabulous singing, you’re going to love Mississippi Opera’s Alexander Awards Concert on Monday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Duling Hall in Jackson, MS.

Six spectacular singers were chosen as winners of the John Alexander National Vocal Competition. Sarah Stembel (Mobile, AL), Christopher Plaas (Johnson City, TN), Kimberly Milton (Houston, TX), Elizabeth Lewis (Chicago, IL), Samantha Long (Valdosta, GA), and Margaret Ann Zentner (Baton Rouge, LA) will perform the concert with members of the Mississippi Opera Orchestra conducted by Artistic Director, Jay Dean.

On Saturday, September 29, 2018, Mississippi Opera hosted the 2018 John Alexander National Vocal Competition, which is sponsored by the Robert M. Hearrin Foundation. Within a seven-hour window, over 70 singers from all around the United States, 4 guest adjudicators (Jerome Shannon of Pensacola Opera, Keith Wolfe of Opera Birmingham, Bruce Earnest of the International Performing Arts Institute/University of Mobile and Dorothy Savage of The Everblue Festival) and 3 pianists (Richard Nechamkin of New York City, Daniel Ley of Northwestern State University and Tyler Kemp of Mississippi College) and members of the Mississippi Opera staff and Opera Guild convened for a full day of competitive singing.  At the conclusion of the day adjudicators chose the top six performers.

The John Alexander National Vocal Competition is one of the fastest growing competitions in the nation.  Sponsored by Mississippi Opera, the competition was named in honor of Metropolitan Opera star and Meridian, Mississippi native John Alexander.  Tickets are available at the door, by phone at 601-960-2300 or online at msopera.org.
