Four Former Eagles in the NFL Playoffs

RAYMOND – Four former Hinds Community College gridiron standouts including Charvarius Ward (McComb), KhaDarel Hodge (D’Lo), Derek Newton (Utica), and Javon Wims (Miami, FL.) are currently rostered with teams competing in the National Football League (NFL) Playoffs.

Charvarius Ward played two seasons at cornerback for Hinds (2014 & 2015) where he accumulated 64 tackles and four interceptions before transferring to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). While at MTSU, in two seasons Ward played in 25 games and tallied 74 tackles and 19 pass break ups. Ward originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Cowboys in 2018 before being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs where he is currently rostered. Following their first round, Ward and the Chiefs will take on the Indianapolis Colts at home in Kansas City this Saturday, January 12 at 3:35 p.m.

KhaDarel Hodge played one season at Hinds (2014) where he made the transition from quarterback to wide receiver. From Hinds, Hodge transferred to Prairie View A&M where he started for three seasons and racked up 104 receptions, 1,797 yards and 21 touchdowns in 30 games played. As a senior in 2017, Hodge earned first-team All-SWAC honors. Hodge was signed on July 24, 2018 by the Los Angeles Rams and currently on their playoff roster at wide receiver. Following their first-round bye, Hodge and the Rams will take on the Cowboys at home in Los Angeles this Saturday, January 12 at 7:15 p.m.

Derek Newton was a First Team All-State selection at Hinds Community College and played in the Mississippi Junior College All-Star Game (2007) before transferring to Arkansas State. There he was a First Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection (2010) and received the Gary Withrow Award for the Red Wolves as most outstanding offensive lineman for the year (2009). Newton was drafted in 2011 in the 7th round as the 214th overall pick by the Houston Texans. He played 6 seasons for the Texans where he started in 68 games before the New Orleans Saints signed him as a free agent in 2018. Newton is currently rostered as an offensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints who had a first-round bye this past week in the NFL Playoffs. Newton and the Saints will take on the Philadelphia Eagles at home in New Orleans this Sunday, January 13 at 3:40 p.m.

Javon Wims played one season at Hinds Community College at wide receiver in 2015. That season Wims led Hinds to a 6-3 record by hauling in 47 receptions for 779 yards and 9 touchdowns. Wims was honored as an NJCAA Second Team All-American. He then transferred to the University of Georgia where in 2017 he played in all 15 games with 14 starts and helped the Bulldogs reach the FBS championship game. Wims led the Georgia Bulldogs in all receiving categories with 45 receptions for 720 yards and seven touchdowns. Wims was drafted in 2018 in the 7th round as the 224th overall pick by the Chicago Bears where he is currently rostered. Wims and the Bear finished their season last week (Jan. 6) with a heartbreaking, one-point loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Wild Card Round.
