The Hinds Bulldog Basketball program embarks on the second half of their season today (Jan. 10) as they take on Jones College on the road in Ellisville at 7:30 p.m.
In regards to his team’s central focus for the remainder of the season, second-year head coach Yusef Fitzgerald stated “Playoffs. That is what it is all about. In order to get there, we need to continue to build upon our first half success and bring effort, energy, and focus every game. The MACJC South Division is deep. There will be no easy games, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
The Bulldogs enter the new year with a 7-3 overall record and have won five of their last six games. The Bulldogs feature a balanced offensive attack that includes five bulldogs averaging double-digit points per game (ppg). Stephane Ayangma leads the way averaging 16 ppg while shooting an impressive 70% from the field. Ayangma currently ranks 13th in the NJCAA in field goal percentage. Dontrell McQuarter and Malik Henry follow the lead averaging 15.6 ppg and 15 ppg respectively. Henry also leads the entire NJCAA in three-point field goal percent knocking down an incredible 71.4%. Additionally, Peyton Taylor is averaging 11.6 ppg while Anthony Johnson is posting 10.5 points per game.
Overall the Bulldogs are averaging 83.3 points per game compared to their opponents who average just 74.1 points per game. Their success offensively stems from their ability to get to the free throw line where they rank 13th in the NJCAA in free throws made per game (19.4). The Bulldogs have also displayed the ability to be lights out shooting and currently rank 16th in the NJCAA in field goal percentage (51.7%).
“We pride ourselves on physicality and applying pressure. Our guys’ ability to get to the hoop creates more opportunities for us from the foul line. It also opens up quality shots for us on the perimeter,” said Fitzgerald.
The remainder of the Bulldogs schedule features 13 regular season games exclusively against MACJC opponents. Seven of the 13 remaining games will be on the road, while the other six games will be played at home inside J.D. Boyd Gymnasium on the Hinds Utica campus. The Bulldogs will look to continue their first half success and earn a bid to the postseason for the first time since 2012.
