Women’s Basketball Looking to Make Second-Half Push

The Hinds Community College Lady Bulldogs basketball team hopes to continue its recent success as they begin their second half of the season and with the start of conference play on January 10.

After a 3-3 start, the women’s basketball team has won two of their last three games to improve to 5-4 on the season. Their recent success will surely give the team momentum as they enter conference play with their January 10 matchup featuring a bout against Jones College in Ellisville at 5:30 p.m. Their conference opener will be followed by games at Meridian Community College on January 14 and at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium against Pearl River Community College on January 17.

The Lady Bulldogs have benefitted from the efforts of a few key players who have spurred the success of the team. Victoria Johnson (Camden) is leading the way in scoring with 22.1 points per game while shooting an impressive 91.8% from the free throw line. Johnson’s point per game average is good for 6th in the country. Also averaging double digits in scoring per game is Nakaylis Washington (McComb) with 11.7 per game while averaging nearly 6 rebounds per contest. Antrell Gales (Fayette) has also been a key contributor for the Lady Bulldogs as she leads the way in rebounds per game (7.7) and blocks per game logging nearly 3 per game.

In looking towards this second half of the season, the team will have to move forward without some core players with three players, Chrishonda Montgomery (Jackson), Vivian Tripp (Clinton), and Gales, having to miss games in the immediate future. The Lady Bulldogs will miss the efforts of these three players especially inside the paint as all three have made up much of the team’s interior presence.

Head coach Jackie Martin-Glass, commenting on the second half of the season, stated, “Our central focus in the second half [of the season] is to get better on defense and limit our opponents’ second chance opportunities. With our losses, it is going to take a full team effort with each individual giving her best to accomplish our goals.”

With their goals in mind, Martin-Glass and her team will certainly be looking to return the program to the playoffs starting with a win against Jones.
