Clinton Park adds resource center for ELL families

Families of students whose first language isn’t English now have a resource center at Clinton Park Elementary School.

“There are a variety of resources that can be useful to our families in supporting their students from home,” said English language teacher Michaela Charanza. “Many of these resources are especially helpful to our newcomer families.”

The center is in the school library, near the laminators.

There are more than 200 students in Clinton’s public schools who are English language learners, and this population is growing. Students have five years to become proficient in English and parental involvement at school is encouraged.

The resource center at Clinton Park has books and DVDs that introduce letters, sounds, numbers, shapes and sight words. There are also early reader books, multicultural books which feature different cultural stories and celebrations and traditional stories in a bilingual format.

“Students and parents can read these in English and their home language together,” Charanza said.

Charanza also creates a monthly newsletter that highlights student success and resources families can use for English language learning and meeting academic expectations.

The ELL resource center is available in the Clinton Park Elementary School library.
