After running a tough stretch of games of late, the Eagle baseball team needed to win against Co-Lin in order to keep their playoff hopes alive as the Wolfpack held a one-game lead over Hinds for the final playoff spot. With the two wins against Tuesday, the Eagles find themselves in a much better position to clinch a spot in the 2019 MACJC playoffs.
Game one was a back-and-forth affair as the Eagles lost an early lead on a three-run third inning by the Wolfpack before tying the ball game on a solo homerun by Tucker Thomas (Biloxi), his second of the year. The game would remain tied until John Bolton(Memphis, TN) knocked in the game-winner with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Game one saw a plethora of hits for the Eagles with three players, Bolton, Pablo Lanzarote (Barquisimeto, Venezuela), and Walker Burchfield (Clinton), posting multi-hit games. On the mound, Preston Johnson (Crystal Springs) posted an impressive outing going 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts.
Game two looked to be all Eagles early as they took a 7 – 2 lead into the fifth inning. Things got shaky in the top of the fifth, however, as walks and errors led to Co-Lin tying the game on a five-run inning. The Eagles would respond in the bottom half of the inning and hold on to the one run lead through the seventh to clinch the 8 – 7 win.
Four Eagles had two-hit performances which included Colby Collier (Clinton), Bolton, Lanzarote, and Jovante Dorris (Raymond). Burchfield posted his 4th home run of the season with a three-run bomb in the contest. Garrett Ramsey (Brandon), in his first career start as a pitcher, went 4.2 innings with six strikeouts and only one earned run. Josh Banes (Learned) earned his second save on the season with a shut-down seventh inning adding to his win in game one against Co-Lin.
The Eagles will next take on Northeast Mississippi Community College on Friday (May 3) at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond at 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. as they look to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The games will be live streamed via the Hinds athletics website via the “Watch/Connect” icon and by following the live stream link under that icon.
