Design Advice I Learnt The Hard Way

It doesn’t matter how much training you have endured or how much professional experience you have had, there is always design advice that can help you out. There’s no shame in wanting to improve your design skills, even if you are at the top of your game and have a long list of upcoming clients. Regardless of what you are designing, there are always ways to provide people with more.

Design Advice Everyone Should Know

  • Think About Quantity and Quality – It’s usually a case of quality being more important than quantity, but this is not technically the case with design. In the design world, quantity and quality are both equally important. Though you shouldn’t create subpar designs or settle for anything less than perfect, the amount of designing you do is something to think about. Rather than showing off one perfect design, show off three great designs. There is a balance between quantity and quality that needs to be found. Rather than wasting time on a single design that is flawless, spread that time across a number of different designs.

  • Don’t Forget About Presentation – Don’t underestimate the importance of context when you are pitching a design idea to someone, as context can hugely impact the success of a design. When you are presenting a design idea, you need to highlight what the problem is that needs to be solved and what you are trying to achieve with the design. Always explain why you have made specific design decisions, to ensure that there’s no confusion. Be confident in your design choices and believe that your design is ideal.

  • Continue to Learn – It doesn’t matter which creative profession you are in, you should never stop learning. The world of design is continuously changing and there are always new techniques to try, which is why you should always strive to learn and develop your skills. Do whatever you need to do to evolve and improve as a designer, even if you already have a lot of experience and knowledge.

  • Avoid Trends – Though you may like to follow fashion trends, you should steer clear of them when it comes to design. There will be a time when a specific style or technique will be trendy and popular, but this is bound to change sooner rather than later. Eventually, one trend will be out and another will be in. To avoid a design looking dated, avoid incorporating any short lived trends. It’s entirely possible to create a fantastic design that does a great job all without paying attention to current trends. Designs that don’t follow short lived trends are sure to impress for much longer.

It doesn’t matter whether you are new to the design world of you have been designing for a number of years, it is always helpful to listen to advice. You may have a good grasp of what works and what doesn’t, but that’s not to say that small improvements can’t be made to improve the end result.
