MotoGP
The MotoGP, or the Motorcycle Grand Prix, is arguably the Super Bowl of motorcycle road racing. It is the oldest motorsport world championship. The first three classes use a four-stroke engine, whereas the last uses electric motors. The Federation Internationale de Motocylisme—the global governing body over motorcycle racing—established the race in 1949. It has since evolved into the leading race in Superbike and road racing. The season consists of 19 races across 15 countries. Additionally, only purpose-built machines are allowed.
Daytona 200
Another notable annual motorcycle race is the Daytona 200. Held at the famous Daytona Speedway, this American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) sanctioned race has a rich history in motorsports. The first race took place in 1937, and its popularity rose significantly in the 1970s, as the race drew some of the largest crowds in AMA history. From 1985 to 2004 it offered a 3.56-mile course for Superbike with notable winners like Scott Russell and Matt Mladin. Today, the course has a 3.51-mile track course for the Sportbike division.
Superbike World Championship
The Superbike World Championship is the top race in the superbike racing division. Founded in 1988, it consists of a series of races held across different racetracks. This race hosts riders from around the world to compete for first. Some of the best racers in AMA history won the championship title, including Scott Russell, Ben Spies, and Nicky Hayden to name a few. The race is set up using a point-based scoring system in which racers must score 25 points for first, 20 for second, 16 for third, and 13 for fourth.
Isle of Man TT
The Isle of Man TT is known as one of the most dangerous racing events in the world due to its 37.7-mile mountain course with over 200 bends and a high fatality record. Specifically, from 1977 to 2018, there have been 258 rider fatalities. It began in 1907 and has since hosted over 99 races. Currently, there are seven race classes: Superbike TT, Supersport TT, Superstock TT, Lightweight TT, Sidecar TT, Senior TT, and—as of 2010—TT Zero, which focuses on motorcycles that produce zero emissions. World Champion Michael Dunlop holds the fastest lap record for 17:02.009.
Motocross World Championship
This is the top race in motocross racing. Motocross is a unique form of off-road motorcycle racing. The World Championship is split between two classes: the MXGP and MX2. Both classes allow for two-stroke and four-stroke engines. Belgium rider Stefan Everts holds the most titles (10), with Italian rider Tony Cairoli in second (9).
