One of those seniors is Clinton’s Shelby Dean.
Dean is a three-sport athlete, participating in cross country, soccer and track & field.
The title of Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete is awarded to one boy and one girl from each of the eight geographical districts. Honorees are chosen by a committee of MHSAA partners and school administrators based on their academic accomplishments and participation in high school athletics and activities.
Being chosen as District VI’s female recipient, Shelby Dean is awarded a $1,500 scholarship through the support of MHSAA partners like BankPlus, Mississippi Sports Medicine, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, Farm Bureau and C-Spire.
“We are very proud of Shelby in receiving the Lindy Callahan Scholar Athlete Scholarship for District VI,” Clinton Athletic Director Brian Fortenberry said. “Throughout her time as a Clinton Arrow, she has been an example of what a student athlete should be. I hope she is as proud to be an Arrow as we are to have her as an Arrow.”
Dean is the third student athlete from Clinton to be awarded the scholarship.
Ty Irwin received the scholarship in 2016 as did Jake Files in 2012.
The Scholar-Athlete awards were launched in 1996 to honor Mr. Lindy Callahan, a long-time athletic director and coach at Gulfport High School and eight-time Hall of Fame inductee.
