Celebrating the Constitution

Daughters of the American Revolution

The Walter Leake Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in Clinton is participating in celebrating Constitution Week, which is commemorated annually from September 17 – 23. Constitution Week was established by Congress in 1956 to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787 and has been observed nationally ever since 1956. DAR chapters across the nation encourage local governments, businesses, churches, organizations and individuals to celebrate the signing of the Constitution. Everyone is encouraged to learn more about the Constitution and the events that led to its creation as the basis of our government and way of life.

As part of the celebration of Constitution Week, DAR organizations throughout the United States encourage participation in “Bells Across America”. This is a traditional ringing of bells by churches, government facilities, fire departments, businesses, individuals simultaneously. In Clinton this year, the Walter Leake DAR Chapter is hosting a ringing ceremony at the Clinton Old Towne Depot Bell Tower at 3:00 p.m. on September 17, 2020.  The public is invited to come to the ringing ceremony at the Depot but due to Covid-19, everyone should wear masks and listen to the ceremony while remaining in their vehicles either in the parking lot or nearby street.

Local churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals, are also encouraged even if they are unable to attend the bell ringing ceremony at the Depot, to participate by ringing bells wherever they are at this time and to help celebrate all during the week by flying flags, reading about the Constitution, etc.
