Two new businesses were recently approved to open in Clinton, both locally-owned, one a nail salon and spa transplant from Rankin county, the other a sister restaurant to a current Clinton establishment.
Aficionados of Mexican cuisine in Clinton now have a choice of two restaurants serving the same great food, with both locations owned by the Nagana family. Salsa’s Grill Mexican Restaurant has been a mainstay for more than ten years in Clinton, and now that same cuisine can be enjoyed at the newly-opened Picante’s Tacos & Burritos, which was granted the go-ahead to open with a unanimous vote by the Board of Aldermen last month.
Picante’s Tacos & Burritos is located at 640 Highway 80 in Clinton, at the former location of Sombrero’s restaurant.
Jessica Macias Nagana, a member of the Nagana family that owns Salsa’s Grill Mexican Restaurant in Clinton, admits they were “nervous to see how things were gonna come out,” because of concerns over COVID-19’s impact on businesses. However, the family moved ahead with their plans, since they were already in the process of opening up prior to the pandemic.
Picante’s, the family’s fifth Mexican restaurant, opened soon after the City approved the owner Ildefonso Naganas’ request, and, despite initial worries, the new business is off to a good start.
“It ended up doing pretty well, and we’re still getting some new people all the time,” Nagana said.
Not only has business been good, but also diners at Picante’s have been blowing up Facebook with rave reviews about the restaurant.
The Clinton location is the third Picante’s restaurant for the family. The Raymond Picante’s has been open for nine years, and the Picante’s in Jackson has been open about four and a half years.
“We have a couple of customers that come to Raymond, and they always ask if we’re closing that one down [since opening in Clinton]. We tell them, ‘No, we’re just opening another one.’”
The family’s first restaurant in the area is the Salsa’s in Clinton, which Nagana said has been open more than ten years. They opened a Salsa’s in Pearl in March 2019.
Diners can expect the same menu and food they have enjoyed at Salsa’s in Clinton for the past decade.
“There’s no difference; it’s the same menu.”
Picante’s Tacos and Burritos can be reached at 601-925-8282. They offer dine-in, curbside service and carryout.
Also opening in Clinton, with a grand opening set for October 10, is KT Nails & Spa, owned by Sanh Tran of Clinton.
Tran said she decided to move her business to the place where she and her family live. The owner of Pearl Nails in Rankin County, Tran decided to close the Rankin County business and has opened KT Nails & Spa at 584 Springridge Road.
“I chose Clinton because I see potential growth here,” Tran said. “I didn’t want to move to Rankin County, because that is not where we want our kids to go to school.”
Tran said the location is perfect for the salon, which offers an extensive selection of services, from classic to platinum pedicures, exfoliating, mud masks on legs and feet, stone massages and more. They specialize in the most up-to-date acrylic nail designs, using colored acrylics, different designs and colors to accommodate everybody’s style.
KT Nails & Spa is located where Linda’s Hair Salon used to be on Springridge, next to Allstate Insurance.
“The location doesn’t have a lot of businesses, so I thought that was a great location, with lots of residential communities are the area, apartments and houses. Plus, we are right off the interstate,” Tran said.
While the grand opening for the business is set for October 10, Tran did a soft opening to accommodate her regular customers who are traveling from Rankin County to Clinton. Tran said they are welcoming new customers now, as well.
“If I have a walk in, I’ll take them anyway.”
“We are the only nail salon in Clinton that is open seven days a week.” In the future, the hours may change, Tran said. “We’re trying to figure out what hours work best for the community, our customers and ourselves.” The salon is currently open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The health and safety of the customers is of utmost importance to Tran, she emphasized.
“During the pandemic, we’re taking extra precautions with our tables and salons and are monitoring number of customers in the salon to protect our community.”
In addition to welcoming walk-ins, customers can book appointments via KT Nails & Spa’s online booking system by visiting their website, www.ktnailsnspa.com, or calling 601-708-4351.
“We’re not just the typical nail salon. We stand out from the rest, enjoy what we do; and we offer up-to-date services.”
