How to Pick a Gift for Her

For many of us, choosing a gift for our wife, mother, daughter or other significant women in our lives can feel like a challenge, but it does not need to be. Rather than falling back on a  last-minute online gift-voucher to a general selling site which lacks thought or effort, consider some of the ideas before so that you can be confident that your choice of gift will be one she will appreciate.

Gifts as a language of love

For some women, the giving and receiving of gifts is symbolic of the love held between the person giving the gift and the recipient. If your better half feels your love with the gifts you give, a well-designed, thoughtful and romantic gift is likely to be well received. For anniversary gifts, use the traditional and modern lists of symbolic materials for each year, from paper for your first anniversary through to oak for your 80th.  There is also a list of anniversary gifts that include gems, flowers and colours for each year if you are looking for guidance.

Gift items she would not buy for herself

Whilst makeup and bathing products fill the shelves in the holidays as suggested gifts for the women in our lives, cosmetics and the like are items that women buy for themselves every other day. Instead, consider a gift that she would not justify buying for herself, though you know she would love this.  This could be a new handbag or some item that she has admired such as tickets to see a band or something else she has mentioned in passing.

Practical gifts

Whilst most women enjoy treasured gifts that they can keep for a lifetime, there are times in life where a more practical gift would be appreciated.  This could be something that solves an issue they have talked about, so whether it is a house cleaning service for someone due to move home or perhaps you can take control of organising a birthday celebration as a surprise. Gifts do not have to be expensive, if money is tight, offer to babysit, take her dog for a walk or bake a cake. Your thoughtfulness in removing some pressure in her life will be very much appreciated.

Experience gifts

A weekend at a spa with close friends or a couple’s massage at a local hotel spa offers the woman you want to celebrate, some time to relax and be pampered. Making memories in activities that will give everyone a good could include a salsa dance class or a cookery lesson on Thai cuisine or something else that would interest her. Arrange all the details, confirming the date with friends and arranging transport on the day. If you like, gift a piece of jewellery or home décor as a memory for the event.

Gifts that last a lifetime

A bouquet is beautiful, but the shelf life is short. Consider instead some flowers that can be grown in her garden or if there is space, gift a tree in her favourite colour or a fruit tree that she can create sweet pies every season. An alternative is a rose bush or other flowering plant that blooms each year

Gift what she has asked for

Some of the most appreciated gifts are ones where she has been asked what she wants or what she is saving up for. Some people have thought this is a lazy way to find a gift for her, but actually, these are considered the most thoughtful gifts by the recipient and you will know that you have made a dream come true.

Gift your time

Your mother or grandmother will likely appreciate the time you spend together more than any gift you might get sent to them in the mail. Often, these older women will say they have everything they need and that spending time with you is enough of a gift. Be generous with your time with these women, make a nice dinner or take a small trip, or arrange time off work to travel to meet her if you live in different cities. Let her know your plans so she can anticipate the day.
