Types of Network and Communication Devices
In order to create a strong and resilient network, you must first understand the many communication devices that it consists of. Communication devices are responsible for transmitting data and information between sending and receiving devices in a network. While there are countless different communication devices that may comprise a network depending on its application, a few key types of hardware remain a staple in most networks. Below, we will address some of the most popular types of network and communication devices.
Fiber Internet
Reliable Fiber Internet is one of the most effective communication devices employed in networks, as it provides fast speeds and low latency for a variety of applications. Additionally, fiber internet offers a secure connection, which is essential for a strong and resilient network.
Routers
A router is a useful networking device that helps forward data packets between two or more different computer networks until it reaches its intended destination. When doing so, routers direct traffic on the internet and guide the data packets along the fastest available path. In most cases, routers are implemented at gateways where they can interpret and direct network traffic as needed.
Hubs
A hub has a similar function to a router, but typically has more limited capabilities. Rather than being able to forward data packets between various networks, a hub can simply forward data packets to the devices in a single network. In addition, a hub can also help direct traffic between a network’s devices. Once the data arrives at one of its ports, it copies the information and sends it along to all of its other ports. In doing so, all the LAN segments can view the data if they choose to accept it.
Access Points
Another type of network and communication device is an access point. This type of networking hardware facilitates the connection of other wireless devices to a wired network. For networks that operate in harsh environmental conditions, an industrial access point solution that can withstand extreme temperatures and intense storms while maintaining reliability is ideal.
Repeaters
A repeater is a useful device that essentially helps expand the signal of a network. Essentially, a repeater receives a signal, increases its power, and then retransmits it at a higher level. Upon doing so, the signal can then travel further and cover longer distances.
