Though the USL League Two soccer season is over, Brilla Soccer Ministry’s work continues year-round. The club, which partners with other ministries and groups across the world, recently sent out its monthly newsletter to its supporters, with updates included.
Brilla partners with a group in Mexico that recently started a fall soccer tournament as an avenue to share the gospel.
“Two years ago, we had eight teams in our league,” said Ben Argil, program partner. “To my surprise last Sunday, we registered twelve teams. The churches have caught the vision. It’s not just about soccer…it’s about reaching the young people from their barrios with the love of Jesus on the soccer field.”
Brilla’s partners in Costa Rica took a group of high school boys on a mission trip to Nicaragua. The boys played soccer, helped plant gardens, and shared the Gospel. At the end of the summer, several soccer players from the Costa Rica ministry were baptized.
Brilla is currently working on taking a team of youth players to Costa Rica on a mission trip in 2022.
Former Brilla player Mike Azira runs a foundation in his native Uganda. The Azira Micheal Youth Foundation recently purchased land that will eventually hold a dormitory, a farm, and a training facility. Azira’s foundation has already provided a platform for local soccer talent through an annual tournament called the Pearl of Africa Youth Championship. Brilla has partnered with the Azira Micheal Youth Foundation for years.
