Sweetheart Formal returns on Feb. 4

The Clinton Courier

On Saturday, February 4, the Wood Activity Center will be the venue for the ninth annual Clinton Therapeutic Recreation Department’s Sweetheart Formal. Started in 2013 to provide a fun event for Challenger League/Abilities Program participants to give them more activities outside of sports, the evening will include music, dancing and fun for all ages of participants with special needs, along with their family and friends.

Prior to having to move to an altered format as a private, seated dinner in 2021 and 2022 due to the pandemic, the event had drawn upwards of two hundred people, which department director Chandra Broomfield hopes will be the case for 2023.

“We created this activity for 2013 to provide a fun event for our Challenger League participants, in order to give them more activities outside of sports,” said Broomfield. “This is a time for our group to listen to music and have an all-around great time together.”

The dance begins at 6 p.m. at the Wood Activity Center at 111 Clinton Boulevard. It will end at 9 p.m. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended.

Before the dance, participants will have an opportunity to get pampered in the Glam Shop, which will be located in the Olde Towne Depot. Stylists from Southern Salon will be on hand to do hair and makeup for the ladies, and volunteers will shine shoes for the men. After being pampered, attendees can ride in style in a limousine from the Depot to the Wood Center. The Glam Shop will open at 5 p.m., and limo rides will begin at 6 p.m.

Upon arrival at the Wood Center, each special guest will walk down the red carpet into the event. There will be a photo booth (with prints), a live DJ with lots of music, refreshments, dancing and more.

“This is one of our favorite annual events, and we are so excited to be able to bring it back in full force this year,” said Broomfield. “We’re looking forward to rolling out the red carpet and having a fun evening of dancing.”

The event is free, but advance registration is required. Participants are requested to email or call 601-924-6387 to RSVP.
