Northside recognized as Mississippi’s National ESEA Distinguished School

Northside Elementary School has been named by the Mississippi Department of Education’s (MDE) Office of Federal Programs as Mississippi’s National Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or ESEA, Distinguished School for 2024-2025.

MDE said in a press release that this prestigious award is a testament to the outstanding academic achievements of the school’s students. It is a recognition of the school’s relentless efforts in making significant improvements for their students, closing the achievement gap between student groups for two or more consecutive years.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the exceptional achievements of Northside Elementary, recently recognized as a National ESEA Distinguished School,” said Dr. Andy Schoggin, Clinton Public School District’s superintendent.

“Northside’s dedicated teachers and staff have made an incredible impact through their commitment to quality education and student success,” he added. “Their hard work and innovative approaches are a shining example of our district’s standard of excellence.”

Northside principal Mandy Ambrose said her campus is both excited and humbled to be recognized as the state’s ESEA Distinguished School, pointing directly to her staff’s tireless efforts in seeking success for each student.

“This award reflects the work we do every day to ensure that every student, regardless of background or ability, has access to high quality instruction and support to meet their individual needs,” Ambrose said.

She added that this recognition is not only a reflection of her staff but also of the hard work performed by the students.

“We know this recognition is not just about what we’ve achieved, but about the students who continue to inspire us with their resilience and hard work,” Ambrose said. “We continue to be motivated, knowing that every step we take brings us closer to creating an inclusive and supportive educational experience for all.”

Leslie Alexander, Clinton Public School District’s director of federal programs, said this distinction is evidence that all students are taught with a sense of urgency towards reaching proficiency in math and reading by the end of third grade.

“Each day, the team at Northside works collaboratively to ensure every student gets what he or she needs,” Alexander said. “Whether it’s a one-on-one session or with a small group inside a classroom setting, this collective effort targets specific supports paired with high quality instruction making Northside a great place for all students to learn and find success.”
