Provine Chapel earns inclusion on National Register of Historic Places“right on schedule”
By Randy Bell
A building on the campus of Mississippi College which dates back to 1860 has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Provine Chapel served students as an educational facility and was a Baptist church for the city of Clinton until 1923, when First Baptist Church of Clinton was built across the street from the campus.
The chapel is an example of temple form Greek Revival style construction. Its listing became official on November 21 of last year.
The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of historic resources worthy of preservation. Most of the listings are buildings like the chapel, but the National Register also recognizes other structures, along with sites, objects and historic districts – including Clinton’s Olde Towne.
Provine Chapel is one of fifteen Mississippi sites to earn the distinction during 2025. The state has a total of 1,534 National Register listings.
