Youth tennis lessons set for Brighton Park

The Clinton Courier
For six weeks, the Mississippi Chapter of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) will offer youth tennis lessons for children at Brighton Park. Lessons will take place on Sundays from March 22 through May 3 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., with no lesson on April 5.

USTA’s “Ready to Rally” tennis program provides children the opportunity to gain confidence learning how to play the game of tennis. The program is open to children ages six to twelve years old. Cost for the series of tennis lessons is $60 per child.

The program is designed to be progressive, with rackets, balls and courts sized to fit the child’s needs and abilities and a focus on making sure that the kids have fun while learning and succeeding in the sport.

The sessions will consist of basic demonstration and instruction of tennis techniques, as well as game strategy and scoring.

Each practice will include a warm-up activity that helps develop coordination and athletic skills, as well as a review of what was learned in the previous practice, before a new skill is introduced with a series of games or drills.

Players should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers and bring water or a sports drink. Hats and sunglasses are optional.

Children are encouraged to bring their own racket, if

they have one, labeled with their name or initials. Loaner rackets will be available.

Any lesson missed due to the weather will be added at the end of the scheduled program.

Participants must have a free USTA member number to register. A USTA number can be obtained by calling 1-800-990-8782 or by joining the organization with a junior membership at www.usta.com.

Once a membership number is obtained, parents can visit MSTennis.com/content/beginner-programs to complete registration, using “Team Number” 7038515523.
