Fresh at Five plans Wagons and Wheelbarrows patriotic parade

Special to The Clinton Courier
Fresh at Five plans Wagons and Wheelbarrows patriotic paradeMain Street Clinton welcomes the community to participate in a patriotic evening at the upcoming June 30 Fresh at Five farmer’s market. Held weekly every Tuesday evening in the 300 block of Jefferson Street from 5 until 7 p.m. through July 28, the markets typically host fifteen to twenty vendors, with offerings ranging from produce and flowers to home-baked treats and even canned items.

The June 30 market will feature special festivities that will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with residents of all ages encouraged to join in a patriotic parade consisting of wagons and wheelbarrows decked out to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday. City Hall and Olde Towne will be adorned in red, white and blue, with the City planning to decorate West Leake Street with stars and patriotic bunting. Downtown businesses will be joining in the fun, as well, with decorated storefronts.

Families are encouraged to enjoy an evening of patriotic fun at the farmer’s market. In addition to the parade, the evening’s offerings will include a community dining area on the brick streets. Tables will be set up on West Leake Street, and market-goers will have the option to purchase BBQ plates or hamburger plates, along with additional selections of Americana-inspired food. Look for selections from 303 Jefferson, Copeland’s BBQ, Coach’s Creamery, Catering by Cathy and Meme’s Brick Street Bakery.

A portion of the sales will be used to help fund the Olde Towne Pocket Park, a proposed new outdoor gathering space. Plans for the park will be viewable at the Main Street Clinton booth during the event.

Those who would like to participate in the inaugural parade are asked to decorate their wagons, dress in patriotic colors, and join in. Awards will be given to the best decorated wagon or wheelbarrow and for the best patriotic attire.

The Walter Leake Chapter of DAR will take part in the event, joining in the parade and with a booth to hand out patriotic memorabilia. Visitors can visit their booth to receive a small American flag, coloring sheets for children and copies of the U.S. Constitution.

Parade participants should plan to gather at the intersection of Jefferson and West Leake Streets by 5:30 p.m. for the short parade walk.

Fresh at Five market booths are available for $10 for those who wish to offload extras from their backyard harvests, grown/raised agricultural products, baked or canned goods, or other cottage food items.
