August: A fresh start for your health
By Guest Columnist Cindy McQueen
There’s something about August that feels like a fresh start. The long days of summer are winding down, the kids are back in school and life begins to settle into a more predictable routine.
For many families, summer is full of vacations, late nights, sports, camps and constantly being on the go. While those memories are worth making, healthy routines often take a back seat. Meals become more spontaneous, workouts get skipped and grabbing fast food between activities becomes the norm.
The good news? August is the perfect opportunity to reset.
Instead of waiting until January to make changes, take a few minutes to think about what you want the rest of the year to look like. Are there habits you’d like to leave behind? Are there new routines that would help you feel healthier, stronger and more energized?
The key isn’t making huge changes overnight. It’s building simple habits you can stick with.
Start with these three:
1. Hydrate before you caffeinate. Before reaching for your morning cup of coffee, drink a full glass of water. After several hours of sleep, your body needs hydration, and this simple habit can help improve energy, focus and overall well-being.
2. Make a plan for your meals. One of the biggest reasons people make unhealthy food choices is because they wait until they’re hungry to decide what to eat. Planning your meals—even just dinner for the week—removes the guesswork. Instead of raiding the pantry or stopping for fast food, you already know what’s on the menu.
3. Schedule your movement. Don’t wait until you “find time” to exercise. Decide ahead of time what movement you’ll do today. Maybe it’s a thirty-minute walk, a strength workout, stretching or riding your bike. The best workout is the one you’ll actually do consistently.
Healthy habits aren’t about perfection. They’re about making small decisions that add up over time. Every healthy meal, every walk, every glass of water and every workout is a vote for the person you want to become.
This August, don’t just help your family get back into a routine—help yourself, too. A few intentional habits today can help you finish the year feeling healthier, stronger and more energized than you started it.
Remember, God gave us the gift of this body, what will you do with yours?
