Mississippi College Baseball Ranked Third

The Mississippi College baseball team was tabbed third in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Poll, while three Choctaws were named to the All-GSC Preseason Team, as announced by conference office on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Brandon BroussardChauncey Callier and Zack Ingram each earned all-conference nods in the preseason release. The Choctaw trio earned All-GSC Second Team recognition in 2019 and were among the 15 selected for the preseason list. MC and Valdosta State each had three honorees on the team while Shorter, Delta State and West Florida each had two while Lee, UAH and West Alabama had one apiece.

Callier finished his debut season in Clinton two on the team in home runs, third in RBI and fourth in batting average. Broussard, mainstay behind the dish, finished second on the squad in hitting and was fifth in RBI. Ingram helped solidify the starting rotation as he finished second on the team in wins and was third in strikeouts. He also sits among the career leaders in wins with 15.

The Choctaws received three first place votes and 123 points in the vote by the conference’s head coaches. The Navy and Gold were selected as the favorites in 2019 and finished as the No. 2-seed in the regular season.

Along with the preseason poll and the all-conference team, the GSC includes the top newcomers from each team. Ken Scott, Jr., and David Dunn represented the Choctaws on the top newcomers list. Scott is an outfielder from Meridian, Miss., and comes to Clinton from East Central Community College. Dunn is pitcher from Linden, Ala., and played two seasons at Meridian Community College before making his way to MC.

DSU was selected first in the vote as the Statesmen garnered four of the 13 first-place votes and 130 points. UWF racked in the most votes with five, but managed just 127 points to sit second in the preseason poll. VSU grabbed the remaining vote and sits fourth in the poll with 111 points.

UAH, Montevallo, West Georgia, Auburn Montgomery and Lee hold the fifth through ninth slots respectively in the poll. UWA, SU, Union and Christian Brothers round out the final four spots in the poll.

Mississippi College opens the 2020 season on Saturday, Feb. 1 as it hosts Harding University in a three-game series. Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start. Sunday’s finale is also marked for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
