Cryptocurrency Investment Scams Among the Top Reasons for Fraud Losses in Mississippi

Cryptocurrency investment scams have been named as one of the leading causes of fraud losses in Mississippi, significantly affecting the state’s financial crime rates. According to recent reports from both state and federal authorities, these scams are becoming more advanced and common, taking advantage of the growing popularity and adoption of digital currencies.

Cryptocurrencies have many uses, ranging from trading to gaming. Crypto holders can now use digital coins to book travel, buy clothes online, or even purchase a car. They can be used in video gaming, to buy in-game assets, or for casino gaming on crypto-based gambling platforms such as Bitcoin and Solana casino sites. These platforms offer online gambling using Solana, Bitcoin, or other popular cryptocurrencies like Ethereum. According to Sergio Zammit from Crypto News, Solana has high processing speeds and low transaction costs, which have helped in positioning it as one of the most popular cryptocurrencies after Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether, according to market capitalization. With the many uses and popularity of crypto growing, scammers are starting to take advantage of people investing in this arena.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported more than $10 billion in fraud losses nationwide in 2023, marking a 14% increase from the previous year. In Mississippi alone, the recorded losses amounted to almost $40 million, with a large amount of these losses linked to fraudulent investment schemes involving cryptocurrency. These scams have targeted many unsuspecting victims, taking advantage of their minimum or lack of knowledge of how digital currencies work.

Fraudsters may pretend to be affiliated with well-known financial institutions or popular cryptocurrency platforms in order to gain your trust and add credibility to whatever story they will be telling. They will put pressure on you to make quick investment decisions and ask you to pay through means that are difficult to trace and recover, such as money orders, cryptocurrency transfers, or gift cards. However, there are a number of security measures that people can take to avoid becoming unsuspecting victims of a scam or fraud, such as the following:

  • You need to verify that the investment opportunities presented to you are authentic.
  • Use reputable wallets to store your cryptocurrencies.
  • Use unique and strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
  • Avoid suspicious links and emails from people or organizations you do not know.
  • Monitor your account activity and enable account alerts so that you get notified whenever there is an activity on your account.
  • Do not invest more than you can afford to lose, and always be wary of high-pressure sales tactics.
  • Where possible, ensure that sellers are legitimate and trustworthy.
  • Stick to well-established and regulated exchanges.
  • Be aware of market fluctuations and potential scams.
  • Do not share your personal and financial information.
  • Be cautious of promises of unusually high returns on investment.
  • Instead of rushing into making an investment decision, take time to research and understand what the investment is all about.

Mississippi residents fall victim to these scams mostly when looking for jobs or opportunities to make money. Most cases go unreported because people are afraid of the stigma and shame associated with being scammed. Lois Greisman, FTC’s division of marketing practices associate director, said that increasing residents’ awareness is one of the most powerful tools that can be used in fighting scams. Consumers need to be careful and skeptical of unsolicited investment opportunities that seem too good to be true.

For crypto enthusiasts, investing in crypto is a smart move, but action should be taken cautiously and after research has been completed. Not only is crypto a unique investment that can diversify any portfolio, but it also opens up unique doors for crypto holders who may want to use their crypto to travel, purchase items online, wager at online casino sites, or stake their crypto to earn interest. Cryptocurrency presents a unique opportunity for many, but everyone should take the necessary precautions.
