Eastside Elementary, Clinton Public School District’s fourth- and fifth-grade campus, held a “Walk Together Day” on Unity Day. Their slogan was “Walking together, we have the power to be kind.” Students were asked to wear orange to send a visible message of building community through kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying. The event started after normal arrival time, so everyone could participate; and their walk took them from Eastside, behind Clinton Park, on to Arrow Drive and back to Eastside.
Unity Day is a national annual event and was started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) in October 2011 as a signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. The call to action was to “Make it Orange and Make it End. Unite Against Bullying!” Participants were encouraged to wear orange to show their support for bullying prevention. Today, events are held across the country with students, educators and others.
