Hamer Morgan named as Arrow football’s head coach

By Danny C. Davis

Hammer Morgan named as Arrow football’s head coach The Clinton High School administration did not have to go very far to hire a new head football coach. Arrow defensive coordinator Hamer Morgan was announced as Clinton’s 20th head coach since the football program began in 1920. He replaced John Carr, who left Clinton after only ten months as head coach for Starkville. And it did not take long for the Clinton Administration to make a move after Carr left about just a few weeks ago.

CHS Athletic Director Judd Bosewell said the search was for someone who “loved and cared for our kids. We wanted someone who understood the importance and demand of the job and wanted to be a part of the community.”

“Coach Morgan fit all the criteria,” said Boswell, who brought Morgan to Arrow Drive in 2015 to run the defense.

“He is a guy that wants to be here, and a lot of people do not understand how important that is.”

Morgan and Boswell coached together at Class 3A Forest. Morgan led Forest to the state playoffs 2012-2014 after Boswell left for Clinton in April 2012.

Boswell and Morgan have been a part of three state championships, two at Forest and one at Clinton.

Morgan said he is excited and feels everything is in place to be successful this coming season.

“We have a very good staff, and we hope everybody stays,” said Morgan.

“We have a lot of skill guys back on offense at quarterback, running back and wide receiver and a good offensive line. We feel like we will be in good shape to make a playoff run.”

The Arrows barely missed the playoffs in 2024, but, after beating Starkville, lost out on a tie breaker points system after a tough loss to Germantown.

Morgan knows the defense at Clinton better than anyone, after being the defensive coordinator for ten seasons. He was part of the coaching staff that helped lead the Arrows to their first-ever Class 6A football championship in 2016.

“We have a lot of talent coming back at linebacker positions and some taller guys in the defensive secondary. We’ve got to get some bigger guys ready to play on the defensive line this spring and the offseason.”

Hammer Morgan named as Arrow football’s head coachMorgan said the team will run the same offensive as last year, one of the most explosive in the MHSAA Class 7A.

Coach Morgan began his coaching career as an assistant football coach at Montgomery High School in Kilmichael, Mississippi, in 2000.

His wife Stephanie is a kindergarten teacher at Clinton Park Elementary School. They are parents to Sidney Owens, an eighth-grader at Clinton Junior High, and twins Kate and Quinn, sixth-graders at Lovett.

Morgan said everything will stay the same with the offseason weight programs, and spring training will start around the end of April and culminate with a spring football game against Ridgeland in late May.

The Arrows open the season at home on August 29 against rival Warren Central.
