Clinton High School senior Murphy Schoggen was recently selected to participate in the competitive Raytheon summer internship program in Forest, Mississippi.
More than eighty students applied for the internship, but only twenty-two were selected.
“Murphy and the other interns are going to experience all components of the engineering world,” Clinton Career Coach Jana Carter said. “This gives them the whole picture of what engineering can be. They will also gain valuable real-world experience while strengthening the soft skills essential for success in today’s workforce.”
Carter added that Raytheon has committed to continue working with the students as they earn their engineering degrees, helping them find jobs in the future.
Schoggen said he is excited to participate in the internship this summer. After taking career and technical education courses centered on engineering, he believed the opportunity was within reach.
“I’ve always wanted to be an engineer,” Schoggen said. “I did my research and talked to my family about this opportunity. They were supportive and helped me walk through the process.”
Schoggen said Carter’s assistance was valuable throughout the application process.
“There were a few parts of the process that took a little longer than I anticipated, but Coach Carter was there from the beginning helping me along the way,” he said.
Carter used her position as a career coach, funded in partnership with Accelerate Mississippi and the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District, to help students complete applications, enhance resumes and participate in mock interviews with professional engineers.
Schoggen said that additional effort paid off.
“She kept me on track, helping me with deadlines and due dates,” he said. “Ultimately, she helped me get this internship, and for that I’m grateful.”
Schoggen encouraged future students to pursue the Raytheon summer internship or internships in other fields, regardless of busy schedules.
“It’s very doable,” he said. “This year, I was a member of the soccer team and the Attaché Show Choir, and I still had time to look into what I needed and figure out how to make it happen.”
The internship will begin on June 1 and conclude July 31.
