Why Men Over 40 Lose Muscle Faster (And What Actually Stops It)

The Hormone Shift Nobody Talks About
After 35, testosterone levels decline by roughly 1 to 2 percent per year. By 45, many men are operating with testosterone levels 20 to 30 percent lower than they had in their prime. The practical implication: the protein intake that maintained muscle at 30 may not be enough at 45. Most guidelines now suggest men over 40 target 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight daily, with particular attention to leucine-rich sources like eggs, meat, fish, and quality protein supplements.
Training Volume Is the Lever Most Men Miss
Cardio keeps the heart healthy, but it won’t stop muscle loss. The signal that tells your body to preserve and build muscle is mechanical load. Resistance training, specifically progressive overload, is the most potent tool available for maintaining muscle mass in your forties and beyond.
Progressive overload means systematically increasing the challenge over time: more weight, more reps, or less rest. Without this progression, your body has no reason to maintain the muscle it already has. With it, studies consistently show men in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s can add meaningful lean mass.

Sleep Is a Recovery Tool, Not a Luxury
Growth hormone is secreted primarily during deep sleep. Men who consistently get six or fewer hours show measurably lower GH output, higher cortisol, and faster lean mass decline. Prioritizing seven to nine hours is not just about feeling rested. It is a direct intervention in muscle preservation.
