Hinds football stays perfect; Wins 34-17 over ECCC

The Hinds Eagle football team stayed perfect Thursday night (Oct. 12th) as they cruised past the East Central Community College Warriors 34-17 and improved to 6-0 on the season.

East Central opened the scoring with an eight-play, seventy-yard drive, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead with 11:55 left in the first quarter.

The Eagles responded quickly with their own six-play, sixty-yard drive, capped off by a 15-yard touchdown run by DJ Sims (Buckatunna) to take the lead 7-6 with 9:41 left in the first quarter.

The Warriors finished off the scoring in the first quarter, after a long six-minute drive that was completed with a 1-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion to give ECCC a 14-7 lead.

DeVante Scott (Scooba) opened up the scoring in the second quarter when he slammed his way into the end zone from 6 yards out, capping off a 6:27 minute drive to tie the game at 14-14 with 3:54 left in the first half.

The Warriors would answer back for the last time when they connected on a 22-yard field goal to take the lead 17-14 right before halftime.

The second half was all Eagles. Sophomore safety, Byron Galvin (Vicksburg), once again made his presence known when he intercepted the Warriors’ pass and returned it 28 yards into the end zone to give Hinds their first lead of the game with 12:15 left in the third quarter. Galvin’s pick-six was his team-leading, fifth interception of the season.

After some big stops by the Eagle defense, freshman quarterback, Tylan Morton (Griffin, Ga.), threw a perfectly placed 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver, Chris Blair (Louisville) to increase the Eagle lead to 28-17 with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

Following another forced punt by the Eagle defense, sophomore kicker, Spencer Cole (Flowood), boomed a 42-yard field goal through the uprights to give the Eagles a 31-17 lead with 12:14 left in the game.

On the ensuing Warriors drive, freshman linebacker, Orlando Brown (Gulfport) showed off his vertical jumping skills when he flew into the air to intercept the pass and give the ball back to the offense.

Spencer Cole once again capitalized on the turnover and connected on a 25-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 34-17 lead with 8:03 left in the fourth quarter.

That score would stand to be the final score and improve the Eagles to 6-0 on the season.

Hinds put up 441 yards of total offense (265 rushing, 176 passing) compared to ECCC’s 316 total yards. Hinds defense impressed as well forcing 4 turnovers (2 interceptions and 2 fumbles) and 5 punts.

The Eagle football team will look to stay undefeated as they take on Jones County Junior College in Ellisville next Saturday, Oct. 21st at 2 p.m.
